Programme Aims

The programme aims to:
?
  1. provide professional architectural education;
  2. educate graduates who have pre-professional architecture degree, providing in-depth knowledge base and skill sets to become practitioners in architecture sectors;
  3. provide theme-based evidence-driven approach to professional practice, students will explore emerging challenges such as sustainable design and planning;
  4. form an integrated multi-disciplinary learning workbench, collaborating with other disciplines within the Department such as civil engineering, building services, urban planning and urban design;
  5. cultivate the mind set and skills of students to conduct and formulate architectural design research and application.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

  1. Review and evaluate in-depth knowledge of architecture;
  2. Interpret and comply with legal aspects of architectural design;
  3. Develop comfortable, efficient and safe built environment with multi-disciplinary approach and sustainable design to meet the society’s needs;
  4. Develop research approach to solve problems in the various areas in architecture;
  5. Appraise building construction related regulations and code of practice.

A. Themed studios (12 credit units)
  • Students must take at least two themed studios.?
  • Students can take only ONE themed studio in a semester. When taking the themed studio, the student cannot take CA6164 Architecture Thesis Studio – Part 1 or CA6304 Architecture Thesis Studio – Part 2 simultaneously in that semester.?

Professional Recognition

This MArch programme plans to seek professional accreditation for the programme from relevant professional institutes, including the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB). To facilitate the accreditation process, the Department will seek advice from the Departmental Advisory Committee, comprising the former President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the President of the Hong Kong Institute of Planners, the Director of Architectural Services, and the Deputy Director of Buildings Department. In addition, the Department will invite experienced architects and professionals from Mainland China to provide seminars and talks to assist students in preparing for the Class I Registration Examination for Architects in China.

Additional Information

  • For courses set with pre-cursor(s), ACE Department requires that all students must have attempted (including class attendance, coursework submission and examination) the precursor course(s) so identified.
  • Where courses are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination, to pass a course, students must obtain minimum marks of 30% in both coursework and examination components, and an overall mark of at least 40%.
  • The teaching schedules of some courses offered in the Summer Term may start a few weeks earlier than the normal University schedule; students are advised to check the teaching schedules with the Course Leaders before registering for the courses.
