Aims of Major

This major aims to:

  1. Bring matriculated or equivalent students up to an academically qualified level for a professional architectural engineer;
  2. Equip students with the knowledge of design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of mechanical and electrical services in buildings;
  3. Produce generalists in architectural engineering who are able to deal with all aspects within the discipline such as electrical, mechanical or electronic engineering; and
  4. Provide students with the concept of full integration between the various disciplines within architectural engineering and in particular, the importance of integration between architectural engineering with other trades within the building industry, i.e. architects, surveyors, builders, developers and property managers.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Major, students should be able to:

  1. Apply fundamental knowledge of mathematics and applied science to formulate solutions on engineering problems;
  2. Identify, formulate and solve architectural engineering problems;
  3. Describe and practice as a professional engineer in compliance with managerial, social and ethical responsibility;
  4. Design and conduct experiments or use modern computational tools, as well as to analyse and interpret data in engineering design for built environment;
  5. Plan, organize, construct, controls monitor and deliver?architectural engineering projects to meet desired needs within realistic constraints in terms of economic, environmental, health and safety and sustainability;
  6. Communicate effectively by means of drawings and oral and written presentations;
  7. Recognize the need for, and to engage in life-long learning, and stay abreast of contemporary issues;
  8. Function on multi-disciplinary teams;
  9. Describe the impact of?architectural engineering solutions in a global and societal context, especially the importance of health, safety and environmental considerations to the general public;
  10. Use the computer/IT tools relevant to the discipline along with an understanding of their processes and limitations;
  11. Describe the legal framework and the relevant statutory requirements; and
  12. Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for architectural engineering practice.

^ :?? The core course CA1167 (3 credit units) may be waived for students admitted with Advanced Standing II depending on their academic background.

Professional Recognition

This Major is accredited by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates are eligible for Scheme A Training in the following disciplines:
? Building Services Discipline
? Energy Discipline
? Fire Discipline for graduates who completed successfully CA4737 and CA4738. (Students should refer to the “Admission Requirements of the Fire Discipline” for the top-up requirements to be fulfiled.)



Additional Information

  1. For courses set with pre-cursor(s), ACE Department requires that all students must have attempted (including class attendance, coursework submission and examination) the precursor course(s) so identified.
  2. Where courses are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination, to pass a course, students must obtain minimum marks of 30% in both coursework and examination components, and an overall mark of at least 40%.
  3. The teaching schedules of some courses offered in Summer Term may start a few weeks earlier than the normal University schedule; students are advised to check the teaching schedules with the Course Leaders before registering for the courses.
