Official Opening Ceremony of the Traditional Korean Costumes Exhibition

As an appreciation of a special donation of the traditional Korean costumes (Hanbok) from the Consulate General of Republic of Korea in Hong Kong, an official opening ceremony of the exhibition of the traditional Korean costumes will be held in the Library. The ceremony will be officiated by Mr. Kang Keun Taik, the Consul General of the Consulate General of Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and Professor H K Chang, our President:

Date: 29 March 2004 (Monday)

Time: 2:15 p.m.

Venue: Library Lobby, CityUHK

The Library is honored to welcome a delegation of visitors from the Consulate General of Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and distinguished members of the local Korean community.

The exhibition will be held from 17 March 2004 to 30 April 2004 in the Library Lobby. It features three types of Hanbok: Nokweonsam, Hwal-ot and Tanryeong.

The Nokweonsam (Green Ceremonial Robes) were worn by queens and princesses at minor ceremonies, and by high-ranking court ladies and women of nobility at major ceremonies. Toward the end of the Joseon Dynasty, commoners were also allowed to wear a simpler version of the Nokweonsam on their wedding ceremony.

Hwal-ot (Bridal Tunic Robes) were worn during the Joseon Dynasty by princesses and daughters of high-ranking noblemen on their wedding ceremony.

Tanryeong (Government Official's Robes) were worn by government officials on official occasions.  The color of the robes as well as the colors and patterns in the square patches on the chest and back indicate the rank of the wearer.

Japanese Hanga Donation Ceremony and Exhibition

The Library is fortunate to receive a generous donation of Japanese hanga from Mr. Denkichi Omi (Юō紗).  Mr. Omi is a famous woodprint artist born in Tokamachi, Niigata, Japan in 1955. Many of his works are inspired by the serenity and landscape of his hometown such as ¨Scenery of Snow World〃 and ¨Woodprints from hometown〃.  He has won top prizes in several competitions and exhibitions. Starting from 1989, he has held solo exhibitions in Japan, Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore. He has also established the Snow Country Youth League to promote cultural exchange between the central part of Japan and Tokamachi.  Since 1996, he has organized a lot of exhibitions, performances, workshops and exchange activities in Niigata and Hong Kong such as the recent activities held in City University of Hong Kong: ¨Niigata-Hong Kong Cultural Exchange 2004 in Hong Kong〃.

The donated collection from Mr Omi will certainly enrich the Libraryˇs cultural assets.  A ceremony acknowledging his generous donation will be held in the Library with details below:
