About the PI

Dr. He is interested in characterizing the occurrences, distributions, and transformations of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environments, and how aquatic organisms respond when exposed to these contaminants. In particular, his research combines a variety of chemical and toxicological tools to understand the exposure and toxic mechanism that leads to maladaptive responses in exposed aquatic organisms at the molecular, cellular and organism level. He has keen interests in studying the emerging contaminants in the estuarian and marine environments (e.g., flame retardants, liquid crystal monomers, fluorinated compounds, endocrine disrupting chemicals, etc.). The areas of his expertise in environmental chemistry and aquatic ecotoxicology include target and non-target chemical analysis, endocrine disrupting effects, oxidative stress, developmental toxicology, and reproductive behavior, particularly in analyzing complex environmental mixture and designing toxicity assessment experiment using in vitro cell lines, small model fish and aquatic invertebrates.
Research Interests

Research Interests

Ecotoxicology

Studies the effects of pollutants on living organisms, including toxicity assessment experiments with model organisms.

Environmental Chemistry

Focuses on the distribution, transformation, and fate of chemical substances in the environment, using advanced analytical techniques for the identification and quantification of pollutants.

Environmental Toxicology

Investigates the health effects of chemical substances on living organisms, including mechanisms of toxicity at molecular, cellular, and individual levels.

Aquatic Toxicology

Specializes in evaluating the impact of pollutants in aquatic environments on aquatic life, including changes in behavior, physiology, and reproductive capacity.

CityU study shows improperly discarded surgical masks threaten the marine ecosystem and food chain

Surgical masks have been part of essential personal protection during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the inappropriate disposal of surgical masks can cause serious microplastic pollution, equivalent to seriously polluting more than 54,800 Olympic-sized swimming pools of seawater annually, researche

Hong Kong researchers say COVID masks could pollute over 54,000 Olympic pools worth of oceans

Discarded surgical masks which fall into the sea could be releasing microplastics as they degrade, polluting an amount of water equal to 54,800 Olympic-sized swimming pools.Dr He Yuhe at City University's State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution made the discovery after spotting discarded masks
