Introduction

Air conditioning generally takes up one third of Hong Kong's electricity consumption. Hence, reducing energy consumption on air-conditioning buildings is one of the major Government's initiatives to improve the environment and conserve energy.

District cooling system at the Kai Tak Development (KTD) can provide adequate chilled water to consumer buildings in the Kai Tak development area for centralized air-conditioning. The project has been developed and commissioned by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the Government in three phases. The first phase has been in operation since 2013. The second phase and the third phase for the proposed works are targeted to be commissioned by 2019 and 2021 respectively. This system comprises two separate plants and associated underground chilled water distribution network and customer substations.

In this VR site visit, you can visualize one of the plants at the north-western side of Kwun Tong Bypass and the northern end of Kai Shing Street in Kai Tak Development Area. It is a semi-above ground structure with two levels of basement. As Hong Kong’s first environmental friendly district cooling system, it provides modern and efficient chilled water to air-conditioned clusters of all non-residential buildings, such as Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Trade and Industry Tower as well as MTR stations for Kai Tak and To Kwa Wan. Around 60 buildings in Kai Tak District will be benefited from the completed project.
