Aims of Major

The major in Psychology aims at providing students with a comprehensive training in psychology, with emphasis on research competence in the study of human behaviour, for further advancement in professional practice in human and social behavioural services.


Aims of Stream
?
Stream I: Health and Development

The Health and Development stream provides specialized knowledge and training on well-being, growth and development, and quality of life.? The main objective of this stream is to enrich human condition throughout the lifespan.? Students will learn about models of assessment, diagnosis, intervention, prevention, and health promotion, with the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences and an emphasis on critical application of learning.? The stream is ideal for students who are interested in public health, clinical and health psychology, and human development.?

Stream II: Mind and Brain

The Mind and Brain stream is designed to enrich students’ learning and understanding of how our mind works from a brain or neuroscience perspective.? The brain imaging and stimulation approaches on studying the human mind, and impact of brain injury on mental function and behavioural performance will be covered.? In addition, hands-on training on experimental design and statistical analysis are included to equip students with the essential skills in this fast-advancing research area.? This stream prepares the students who are interested in a future career or academic path in cognitive?neuroscience, neuropsychology, psycholinguistics, or?in areas taking a brain or neuroscience perspective to understand the human mind.?

Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs)

  1. Identify the ethical implications of the study of psychology for human integrity and diversity;
  2. Demonstrate systematic knowledge and its scientific underpinning in the core areas of psychology;
  3. Use psychological theories and empirical evidence to analyse human behaviour and mental processes scientifically;
  4. Construct and conduct a scientific study and produce a systematic presentation of analyses in a professional manner; and
  5. Evaluate and make psychological discoveries in a changing social and cultural context.

Professional Recognition

Holders of this degree with at least a lower second class honours or GPA 3.0 and?have successfully completed a?list of courses in different areas of psychology stipulated by?the Hong Kong Psychological Society (HKPS) shall be eligible to apply for Graduate Membership of the HKPS. Every HKPS membership application is assessed on an individual basis.
