What You Will Be Studying?

There are two main subject areas: Linguistics and Language Applications.

Core courses in Linguistics include: Fundamentals of Linguistics, Introduction to Linguistic Research, Language in Society, Language and Mind, Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, and Semantics.
Core courses in Language Applications include: Introduction to Language Technology and Computational Linguistics.

At a more advanced level, students may choose from among courses such as Computational Lexicography, Computer-Aided Translation, Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Conversation Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, Experimental Phonetics, First/Second Language Acquisition, Historical Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Sociolinguistics.

1. Participating in the internships and other co-curricular activities offered provides students valuable job experience in fields that require knowledge of languages, linguistics, and language applications.

Students will be prepared for careers that require language expertise and language-related computing skills. In addition to opportunities in advanced studies, graduates will have employment prospects in education and research, as well as in administrative and executive positions in various public and private sectors. They will have an important role to play in language and information service sectors of Hong Kong, Greater China, and the world. Moreover, this major is recognized by the Education Bureau as an English language major degree for the purpose of teaching in Hong Kong.

Why Architecture and Civil Engineering?

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (ACE) at the City University of Hong Kong is unique in Hong Kong, as we offer a broad spectrum of construction-related programmes, from architecture to civil engineering, building services engineering (or architectural engineering) and surveying, within a single department. With this advantage, students are not only able to acquire professional knowledge of their chosen discipline of study (e.g. architecture), but they can also interact with students or other programmes (e.g. civil engineering) to broaden their horizon. The interdisciplinary knowledge and team working ability have made our graduates very sought after in the construction industry.

Applicants will be considered for admission to first-year studies at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Students will enter a major (current major options: Architectural Engineering; Civil Engineering; Architecture and Surveying) after one year of study. The top 40% of students# will have a free choice of majors offered by the Department. The other 60% of students will be allocated a major within the Department, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by individual majors.

Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering is one of the founding departments of City University of Hong Kong. The Department offers professional education at both undergraduate and postgraduate degree levels. Our programmes are academically rigorous and professionally focused. Adopting an inter-disciplinary approach, our programmes are delivered by a professional team that includes civil and structural engineers, architectural/building services engineers, construction engineers, material technologists, environmental scientists, architects, urban planners, building surveyors and quantity surveyors. Our graduates are therefore uniquely placed to serve the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry.

The AEC industry in Hong Kong is flourishing. Infrastructure and building developments, and the maintenance and refurbishment of existing facilities, have contributed to Hong Kong's growing economy. There are notable opportunities for innovations and career development. In addition to the Hong Kong market, the local AEC industry can expect to participate actively in the markets of the People’s Republic of China. The Department has established close collaborations with universities and professional bodies both locally and in Mainland China.

The introduction of four-year university education offers a platform for the implementation of a discovery-enriched curriculum.
