Department of Physics

Building on the excellent tradition of the physics faculty in the former Department of Physics and Materials Science, the Department of Physics aspires to become a leading physics department in the Asia-Pacific Region. Our faculty members have received international recognition, including fellowships from prestigious societies such as the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Materials Research Society.

Students pursuing the BSc Physics major are taught are taught fundamental physics topics, and various specialized physics-related disciplines such as biophysics, medical physics, financial engineering, optics, and material science/solid-state physics, paving their way to diversified career paths in the medical and health care, engineering, education, commercial and industrial sectors or postgraduate studies. Students may take part in the Department’s research attachment scheme, which gives them early exposure to discovery and innovation.

Our Target

We equip our students with knowledge and critical thinking skills that will enable them to tackle difficult problems throughout their careers. The curriculum teaches not only foundational courses in physics, but also technology-driven courses such as computer modelling and advanced instrumentation. It enables students to acquire knowledge and skills from the following areas: Biophysics, Medical Physics, Financial Engineering, Optics, and Material Science/Solid-state Physics. Graduates are well equipped not only for developing a diverse range of professional careers but also for pursuing postgraduate studies.

What You Will Be Studying

In your first year, you will study a variety of fundamental physics and gateway education (GE) courses (e.g. Chinese and English courses). Building upon your general physics foundation, you can acquire knowledge and skills form the following areas: Biophysics, Medical Physics, Financial Engineering, Optics, and Material Science/Solid-state Physics.

Career Prospects

Physics graduates enjoy a diverse range of challenging careers from medical physicists, financial engineers, data scientists to professionals in STEM education, scientific research and technological development. Graduates may also develop their careers in the commercial sector or take up public sector roles in organisations such as the Hong Kong Observatory, the Environmental Protection Department and the Hospital Authority.

The College of Science and the Department offer work placement opportunities through different internship schemes that provide students with full-time job attachments to companies in Hong Kong, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area and Overseas. Through such placements, students will:

The Psychology major provides students with comprehensive training in psychology with an emphasis on experimental and research competencies, and prepares students for professional development in human service careers and advanced training in professional psychology and related fields.

Our graduates are particularly suited for people-oriented jobs such as human resources, public relations, customer services, children and youth services, education and training, counselling and guidance, health-related services, family and community work, etc. Students are also well-prepared for jobs that require strong research skills and competence, critical analysis and communication abilities, such as scientific or applied research, research and development, project management and so on. Students who aspire to practise as professional psychologists will be able to pursue advanced education at the Master's or doctoral level in Hong Kong or overseas with training in pursuing scientific research or applied psychological training such as health, forensic, clinical, educational, counselling and occupational psychology.

The Department of Public and International Affairs is a multidisciplinary department with a multinational faculty and a strong international orientation. Our Target

The aims of the major in Public Affairs and Management (PAFM) are to:

provide students with a comprehensive education in the common core theories, concepts, and knowledge bases of public policy, public management, and political science;
enable students to specialise in public policy, public management, or political science for gaining an understanding of the essential theories, principles, dynamics, and analytic approaches of these bodies of knowledge;
equip students with the theoretical, conceptual and analytical tools to understand comprehensively public policy, public management, and political developments in Hong Kong, China and the contemporary global world; and
produce graduates who can meet effectively the human resources needs of a wide range of public and private sector employers in administrative, management, and policy and political analysis positions, as well as in the media and non-governmental organisations.

The Political Affairs and Governance stream will engage students in the study of wider political and governance issues, the Department can effectively broaden students’ horizons, boost their political and governance skills, and eventually improve their general employability.

The Public Policy and Management stream focuses on human resources management, financial resources management, organisational behavior in public management, management ethics, public policy ethics, and housing studies.

A number of electives will also be offered to PAFM students to enrich their learning in the subject discipline.

The PAFM Major equips graduates for successful careers in a wide range of administration, management, politics, and policy positions in both the public and private sectors. PAFM graduates work as administrative officers and executive officers in various government departments. Some also work as administrators and managers in public organisations such as universities, public hospitals, Housing Authority, Hospital Authority, and Airport Authority. Some teach in secondary school and some have gone on to work as anchors and reporters in the news media. Many of our graduates find employment in the private sector in the fields of public transport, banking, financial services, and property management.

The Department of Public and International Affairs sends a large number of PAFM students to overseas universities in Europe, Australia, United States, Canada, and Asia for exchange study. The Department has achieved an impressive record in securing of international exchange places with universities in Europe, North America and Australia. The Department also provides internship to PAFM students to gain practical working experience in a wide range of both public and private organizations. This helps the career planning of PAFM students. Apart from these, PIA summer schools are very popular among PAFM students for spending a summer in a foreign setting. Various field trips and study tours to different places are organized by faculty in different courses to broaden the horizons of PAFM students to enable them to compare and evaluate the practices of public policy and the operation of government in different countries.

The Pathway for Research, Innovation, and Multinational Engineering (PRIME) programme is a flagship programme of the College of Engineering designed to provide exceptional students with a comprehensive education in engineering and opportunities to gain valuable experience through research internships and work placements in top universities and companies worldwide. This programme is intended to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field of engineering and to prepare them for successful careers in the global engineering industry. The PRIME programme is open to talented and motivated students with a passion for engineering and a commitment to excellence.

Key features

Students accepted into the programme receive a range of benefits, including:

Free Choice of Major: Students admitted to the PRIME programme are free to choose any major in the College of Engineering upon accepting the offer. They will be enrolled in one of the departments before starting their first year of study. For departments offering a single major, students will be enrolled in the major in the first year. In the case of departments offering more than one major, students will be admitted to the department in their first year and enrolled in their pre-selected major in subsequent years.
One-on-One Mentorship: Each student will be paired with a faculty member who will provide personalized guidance and support throughout the programme. The faculty mentor will help the student identify their academic and professional goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and provide feedback and guidance along the way.
Overseas Experience in Year 3 or Year 4
a) Research Internship: Selected students will have the opportunity to work with leading researchers in their field at one of the top overseas universities. This will provide students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge research and will help them develop essential skills in data analysis, experimental design, and scientific communication.
b) Global Work Placement: Selected students may also have the opportunity to be placed in an international company in North America (US, Canada), Europe (France, Germany, Switzerland, etc.), and other developed countries (Singapore, South Korea, Japan, etc.) to gain work experience and apply their engineering skills in a real-world setting. This will enable students to build their professional network, develop communication skills, and gain invaluable industry experience.
Interdisciplinary Final-year Project: With the collaborative culture that the College fosters, the experienced faculty with expertise in a diverse range of research areas, and the state-of-the-art research facilities, students will be aided in conducting interdisciplinary research in their final-year projects. An interdisciplinary final-year project will offer an excellent opportunity for students to explore and integrate knowledge from multiple fields, which will be a valuable experience for their future careers.

Undergraduate plus Master's Degree Programmes: Students in an “Undergraduate plus Master's Degree Programme” will receive a conditional offer for a Master's degree programme when they join CityUHK as undergraduate students. They can benefit from higher-level courses, such as those with research elements and normally taught at the postgraduate level, during their undergraduate study. On completion of their study at CityUHK, students will be awarded two degrees (Bachelor's degree + Master's degree).
Entrepreneurial Training: The College offers a Minor in Engineering Entrepreneurship, which aims to provide entrepreneurial training to help students develop the skills and knowledge needed to start and operate their engineering businesses. Global Challenges: CityUHK X Sino Grand Challenges Scholars Program (CityUHK X Sino GCSP) is a combined curricular and extracurricular element to prepare students to be the future engineers and scientists that address and solve the global challenges facing the world in this century. CityUHK X Sino GCSP would give students a sense of purpose and enable them to positively impact the world through their engineering work.
Cross-Cultural Competence: Through student exchange programmes, study tours and the Cultural & Language Immersion Scheme (CALIS), students are provided with opportunities to develop cross-cultural competence through activities such as language training, cultural immersion experiences, or international service projects. This would help students to become global citizens and to develop the skills needed to work effectively in diverse and multicultural environments.

Flagship Scholarships to Local Students

Local JUPAS students admitted to the Flagship Programmes with outstanding HKDSE examination results shall be automatically considered for the Flagship Scholarships. The Flagship Scholarships include:

Tuition and hall fees incurred at CityUHK and are tenable for the normal duration of the programmes concerned
- Full Scholarship: 100% tuition and hall fees (double room occupancy)
- Half Scholarship: 50% tuition and hall fees (double room occupancy)
Guaranteed berth in the Halls of Residence
A one-off special sponsorship of a maximum amount of HK$500,000 for an overseas exchange of up to one year at a top-ranked university

Admission Arrangements

Students admitted to the PRIME programme are free to choose their majors upon accepting the offer. They will be enrolled in one of the departments* before starting their first year of study. For departments offering a single major, students will be enrolled in the major in the first year. In the case of departments offering more than one major, students will be admitted to the department in their first year and enrolled in their pre-selected major in subsequent years.

*For 2025 entry, the choice of enrolment includes the Department of Biomedical Engineering, which was previously under the College of Engineering and is now affiliated to the new College of Biomedicine established on 1 January 2025.

The College operates the Co-operative Education Centre with a mission is to work with industry, local and overseas, to provide co-operative education for students. The Centre aims to nurture a new generation of engineering professionals and industrial leaders with a global outlook who are capable of meeting the challenges in this fast-changing world.
