Business Decision Analytics

Career Prospects

Our graduates are prepared to work in the areas which require data analytics, statistics and information management knowledge.

Summer Internship Programme

Many of our students are able to find summer internship, either by themselves or through our referral, in various industries. Below are some sharing from the students:

Gloria Andry Putri (Intern in HSBC)

Hi! My name is Gloria. In July 2022, I joined The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) as an intern in Commercial Banking, specifically in Business Banking - Strategy and Innovation.

Job Nature

My daily tasks include data analysis to understand client behavior in our platform, research, and engaging with clients. One of the biggest projects I was assigned to support was the launch of the new platform called Business Go which allows me to communicate with different teams and divisions including marketing, IT, content, and many more. BDAN has prepared me with the essential skills including excel, SQL, and presentations which I could apply directly to the projects.

Achievement and Learnings

During the internship, I was able to connect with like-minded people, have a better understanding of the business, and applied what I have learnt in university. Not to mention, my team has taught me on how to present data in a more efficient way to align with business expectations. This internship allowed me to find my passion in the financial industry and decide to pursue a career in banking.

Philomena Wang (Intern in Sigtica Limited)

Hi, everyone! I’m Philomena, a current student majoring in Business Decision Analytics. In the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to intern at Sigtica Limited, a start-up firm where I worked as a data analyst.

Job Nature

Sigtica Limited is a dynamic and fast-growing startup, and I was thrilled to secure a role as a data analyst. My solid background in programming and data analysis tools helped me stand out during the application process. Through this internship, I realized how valuable technical skills in machine learning and natural language processing are in today’s job market. My prior experience with programming languages and statistical analysis gave me the competitive edge needed to land this exciting opportunity.

Learning and Achievement

This internship marked a shift from my previous experiences, as it was more focused on computer science and model development. Although I initially encountered challenges adapting to the technical demands of the role, my perseverance and problem-solving skills enabled me to overcome these obstacles. I successfully built and fine-tuned a prediction model for Named Entity Recognition (NER), automating the extraction of key information from IPO documents. By leveraging the Transformer library, I developed a model that achieved an impressive F1 score of 95%, streamlining the process of analyzing large financial documents.

Throughout the internship, I gained invaluable experience working with different NLP platforms, including spaCy, Transformer, and ONNX. I was able to convert models between these platforms seamlessly, which enhanced my technical expertise. The data-related courses offered by DAO Department were particularly rewarding as they gave me a solid understanding of big data operations and statistics which is very important in the Internet industry.

Professional Qualification

Students are able to obtain internationally recognised professional qualifications including:

SAS Base Programmer Certification

SAS Advanced Programmer Certification

SAS Predictive Modeler Certification

The Financial Risk Manager (FRM).

Internship Sharing

Many of our students are able to find summer internship, either by themselves or through our referral, in various industries. Below are some sharing from the students:

Fred Chan (Intern in DBS Bank)

Job Nature

Hello, I am Fred. I have worked in the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) since August 2013. My main duty is to analyse products and produce accurate reports.

How can I find this internship?

The department already has a long-term relationship with DBS, and cooperates with DBS to set up this internship programme every year. If DBS has an internship vacancy, they will contact the Department, and students will then be invited to take part in the programme. The main selection criteria are previous working experience and academic performance (e.g., SAS and VBA).

How does the knowledge learned in the major fit my job?

The knowledge I gained is highly related to my job. In the daily analysis, I mainly use SAS and Excel VBA programming to handle and analyse large amount of data. Those programming skills are our competitive advantage. I also learnt a lot about data mining tools and different statistical models in my major. This is very useful for analysing different structures and types of data in my job.

How can I effectively study a Business Analysis major if I did not study M1, M2, Pure Mathematics and Computer subjects in my secondary school?

I thought the same thing before I studied managerial statistics. In my secondary school I was a science student but I only studied Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which only provide simple Mathematics knowledge. The fact is, there are different statistics and programming subjects in Business Analysis, but don’t worry! We don’t need to know every Mathematics procedure and proof. These subjects mainly focus on application and concepts, so if you try your best you can study and learn very well!

Venita Ho (Intern in Standard Chartered Bank and Hang Seng Bank)

Hello, I am Venita. In the past two years, I have completed two internships, at the Standard Chartered and Hang Seng Banks.

Intern in Standard Chartered Bank

I made the decision to apply for an internship at the Standard Chartered Bank, and although at first I was only responsible for data input, I soon got the opportunity to do data analysis using Excel.

Intern in Hang Seng Bank

I was offered an internship at Hang Seng Bank through our department in January this year. After learning SAS programming in the last semester, I wanted to gain more experience by working in banking companies. I have met new friends during my internship period, and it is interesting that most of them are also MST graduates. This proves that these banking companies are likely to offer jobs to students from our programme. I am certain that our courses provide us with practical skills that will help us in our future careers.

Career Path

BDAN graduates are prepared for statistical, analytical and managerial positions in financial, commercial and government sectors.

GOM graduates are prepared for positions like management trainees, operations analysts and project managers in consulting, financial operations, health care operations, procurement and sourcing, retail management and supply chain management areas.
