COM Research Seminar: Artificial Intelligence and Human Communication by Prof. Eun-Ju LEE
12 Sep 2024 (Thu)
On September 11, 2024, Prof. Eun-Ju Lee, a distinguished professor of Communication and the director of the Center for Trustworthy AI at Seoul National University, delivered an engaging seminar titled “Artificial Intelligence and Human Communication.” This event inaugurated the Distinguished Lecture Series Research Seminar for Semester A 2024/2025.
Prof. Lee, who served as the Editor-in-Chief of
Human Communication Research from 2017 to 2020 and was elected a Fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA) in 2019, serving as its President from 2023 to 2024, has significantly shaped understanding in the dynamics of misinformation and the impact of AI on communication. Her extensive academic and leadership experience has equipped her with unique insights into the interface between technology and human interaction.
During the seminar, Prof. Lee presented empirical findings from recent studies demonstrating how individuals process, evaluate, and respond to AI systems engaged in various communicative tasks, such as moderating online comments on news platforms, delivering fact-checking verdicts, or facilitating user interactions. She introduced a theoretical model that integrates the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) paradigm with recent research on the machine heuristic. This model offers several testable propositions intended to enhance our understanding of AI’s influence on human communication.
The seminar attracted approximately 62 participants, including faculty members, Ph.D. students, and scholars from diverse disciplines, reflecting the broad academic interest in the implications of AI technology for communication studies.
