On February 26, 2025, Cathy You, a documentary filmmaker and former journalist, and Ziru Wang, a documentary director and writer, delivered a seminar titled
"金三角電信詐騙背后的中國縣城/邊緣群體困境" (
The Struggles of Marginalized Communities Behind Telecom Scam in the Golden Triangle). This was the second session in our Anti-Scam seminar series. Cathy You, known for her work exploring migration and socio-economic disparities, has received recognition for her award-winning documentary
Chinatown Beat Patrol,. Ziru Wang, whose work spans four continents, focuses on issues such as poverty, violence, and cross-cultural narratives, documenting marginalized groups worldwide.
The seminar began with Cathy sharing the inspiration for her documentary, discussing how Yunnan’s unique socio-economic conditions shaped the backdrop of telecom fraud. Outdoor blogger Hu Qidao recounted his experiences leading rescue missions along the Thai-Myanmar border and presented compelling video footage, including previously unseen moments of critical rescues. The seminar also explored the filmmaking process, with Cathy and Hu detailing how they captured significant scenes and the personal struggles of those affected by fraud. Future filming plans, including stories of survivors rebuilding their lives and continued rescue efforts, were also discussed. The seminar attracted around 20 Ph.D. students and faculty members, both online and offline, who engaged actively and contributed to a thought-provoking discussion.
