HKICE Distinguished Lecture

From KU Leuven, Professor Johan Hofkens of the Department of Chemistry and Professor Maarten B.J. Roeffaers of the Centre for Membrane Separations, Absorption, Catalysis and Spectroscopy will deliver a joint lecture on 3 April. In his presentation titled ¨The Power of One: From Single Molecule Investigations to Materials Research and Beyond〃, Professor Hofkens will give an overview of the single molecule experiences and development of new microscopy modalities in his laboratory. Professor Roeffaersˇ lecture, titled ¨Illuminating Materials Complexity: Microscopy as Catalyst for Materials Innovation〃, will feature an in-depth discussion of his microscopy-centered strategy to elucidate how nanoscale structural and functional differences impact the behaviour of solid catalysts and metal-halide perovskites. William Benter Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Arno Kuijlaars of the Department of Mathematics at KU Leuven will conduct a lecture titled ¨Large Random Tilings of a Hexagon〃 on 7 April. In his lecture, Professor Kuijlaars will present a rigorous analysis of a three-periodic hexagon tiling model, incorporating advanced mathematical tools such as matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials, Riemann-Hilbert problems, and steepest descent analysis on a Harnack curve. Joint cinema studies symposium

The School of Creative Media will host a joint symposium titled ¨New Directions in Trans-Asian Cinema and Media Studies〃 with the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies at New York University on 24 April. Through presentations, panels, and a roundtable discussion, experts in Asian Cinema will discuss emerging questions in the field, weaving a model for a ¨trans-Asian〃 film studies approach that is cognizant of the durability of the nation state as well as alternative models of situated multiscalar ideas of place and belonging. Professor Luk Kwai-man, Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, has received the 2025 IEEE AP-S Chen-To Tai Distinguished Educator Award for his significant contributions to antenna theory, design and applications education. This award recognises individuals who have given outstanding service to education in antennas and propagation and whose exemplary careers in teaching and research represent the highest quality of service.

Gao Yixiong, Zheng Shangkun, and Yan Yachao from the Department of Computer Science (CS) secured 1st place among teams from Hong Kong and ranked 13th worldwide at the 2024 IEEEXtreme 18.0 Programming Competition. Supervised by Professor Li Minming and Professor Ray Cheung, the students had to compete for 24 hours to solve complex programming problems set for this prestigious global challenge.

Professor Derrick Jiang and his research team from the Department of Electrical Engineering have been honoured with Y-LOTˇs 3rd Hong Kong SciTech Pioneers Award 2023-2024. The award celebrates the valuable contributions of outstanding research teams in STEM fields. Professor Jiangˇs team was awarded in the Deep Tech category for their exceptional dedication and contributions to emerging technologies for electric vehicles.
