| UGC
comments on ADPs
The University Grants Committee (UGC) made an announcement on 10 May concerning
the Academic Development Proposals (ADPs) submitted by the eight UGC-funded
institutions for the 2005-08 triennium. CityU's proposal to make creative
media a growth/priority area was endorsed. Out of the 840 top-up places
for the second year intake that UGC allocated to the eight institutions,
CityU received 210 places, the second largest number. Professor Edmond
Ko, Vice-President (Undergraduate Education), said that though the first
year intake remains the same, the second year intake has increased, so
the overall intake expanded, and "this is a positive sign" The
UGC has also endorsed CityU's proposal to start two new undergraduate
programmes -- Criminology, and the Teaching of English. The latter will
be a joint programme with the Hong Kong Institute of Education. In the
light of the UGC's advice, the University will make internal adjustments
of student places among faculties/schools. A report on student load matrix
will be sent to the UGC on 5 June.

retreat
On 10 May, a total of 22 Management Board members and
invited staff members attended a one-day retreat at CityU's Shenzhen Applied
R & D Centre to brainstorm ideas and share views on the future direction
of CityU's mainland activities and self-financing programmes.
The aim of expanding into the mainland is to establish the brand name
of the University at the national level and to tap the large market for
revenue generation. Three strategies were discussed at the retreat.
On research and
taught postgraduate programmes: encourage collaboration with mainland
insitutions in niche areas;
On undergraduate
programmes: continue to do programmes in Hong Kong, but recruit mainland
students for CityU's unique educational experience of whole person development;
On opportunities
for manpower training: to offer through the School of Continuing and
Professional Education (SCOPE) and CityU Professional Services Ltd (CPS).
The incentive for offering self-financing programmes is to cushion the
UGC cutback in funding. In running self-financing programmes, participants
agreed that adjustments are called for in the current infrastructure,
culture and mindset of staff. The keys to success, they affirmed, are
quality programmes and successful marketing.
The University will set up steering groups to follow up on related issues.

| Senior
staff appointments
Professor L K Chan, currently Dean of the Faculty of Business
has been re-appointed to serve another term of office from 1 August 2004
to 30 June 2006.
The University announces the appointment of Professor Hsianghoo Steve
Ching as University Librarian. Currently Director of University Libraries
and Professor of Business School in Feng Chia University, Taiwan, Professor
Ching will formally assume duty on 2 August 2004. He visited the University
from 12 to 18 May to meet with senior staff.

In search
of Faculty Deans
The Search Groups for the appointment of Deans of the
Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering,
and the School of Law are in the process of inviting applications and
nominations both internally and outside the University. After suitable
candidates have been identified by the Search Groups, the Selection Committees
will approve the final shortlist based on the recommedations of the Search
Groups. The search for a dean of the School of Creative Media is advancing
well and expected to conclude this summer.

Two teams of students studying the Bachelor of Arts (Hons)
in Creative Media in the School of Creative Media won in the Cyberport
Website Design Competition (Tertiary Section). Champions: David Cheung
Wai Sun, Cecilia Hui Long Wai and Mahbubani Vivek Ashok; First runners
up: Will Lam Sai Ho, Lisa Cheung Wing Shan and Gloria Cheung Yeuk Yin.

New
programme
CityU and the Univeristy of Paris Dauphine signed a cooperation
agreement on 13 May to offer Hong Kong's first ever joint degree programme
-- Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics for Finance and Actuarial Science.
The new postgraduate programme will be launched in September this year
and the award will be jointly issued by both univeristies.
