Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs)  have revolutionised today’s mobile and fast-paced society by powering portable electronics and electric vehicles. In 2019, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for their pioneering work in the development of LIBs. The LIBs used in smartphones are composed of four different parts: LiCoO2 cathode, graphite anode, seperator and electrotyle. This lecture will take you to look back at the milestone discoveries that shaped modern LIBs, especially for portable electronics applications.
