Sustainable Hong Kong Research Hub holds public seminar on One Belt One Road

The Sustainable Hong Kong (SusHK) Research Hub, a platform driven by the CityU research team consisted of faculty members from the Department of Accountancy, Department of Public Policy and School of Law, co-organized with Our Hong Kong Foundation and Public Policy Institute, held a public seminar on “One Belt One Road: Opportunities for Hong Kong” at City University of Hong Kong on 27th March. The seminar gathered experts from different sectors to share their knowledge about how the One Belt One Road initiative would create impact on the global economy.

Prof Wenlian Cao, Director General of the International Cooperation Center of the National Development and Reform Commission (ICC-NDRC), was the keynote speaker and delivered a speech entitled “One-Belt-One-Road Initiative and International Cooperation in Energy Production – Opportunities for Hong Kong ( 一帶一路”建設與國際產能合作 — 兼論香港的機遇)”. Other guest speakers included Prof Shoulong Mao, Executive Dean of Academy of Public Policy at Renmin University of China, and Dr Chaoyang Jing, Director of the Regional Cooperation and Opening Up Institute of ICC-NDRC, Mr Nicholas Kwan Ka-ming, Director of Research of Hong Kong Trade and Development Council, and Mr Stephen Wong Yuen-shan, Deputy Executive Director of Our Hong Kong Foundation and Head of Public Policy Institute.

The experts and practitioners discussed different development plans that aim to make central Asia more connected to the world, and promote trades between countries. At the forum, Prof Cao pointed out that Hong Kong, as a global city and financial hub in Asia, should get itself prepared for the challenges and opportunities arising from the OBOR initiative. This would require a collaborative effort of different industries to make strategic plans and directions that will benefit Hong Kong in face of the changes. The public seminar was chaired by Prof Linda Li, Convenor of the Sustainable Hong Kong Research Hub, and Professor of the Department of Public Policy of CityU. CityU has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Renmin University of China on the same day, to foster research collaboration on opportunities for Hong Kong’s professional services under the Belt-Road Initiative. About Sustainable Hong Kong Research Hub CityU's Sustainable Hong Kong Research Hub was established in late 2016, and obtained HK$3.4 million in funding from the Strategic Public Policy Research Funding Scheme by the Central Policy Unit for the research project “Hong Kong Professional Services in the Co-Evolving Belt-Road Initiative: Innovative Agency for Sustainable Development”. The Hub is a multidisciplinary platform that conducts research on issues and topics related to sustainable development in Hong Kong and the Greater China region. It also aims to enhance collaborations between academics, industries, the government and society.
