The State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) was awarded the "2024 Dayu Water Conservancy Science and Technology Progress Award (2nd Class)" by the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, for the project "Key Technologies and Applications for Enhancing Urban Seawall’s Defence Capability and Ecological Function in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area". The award underscores CityUHK’s remarkable achievements in advancing sustainable development.

The Dayu Water Conservancy Science and Technology Award (Dayu Award) was the first national science and technology award in the field of water conservancy in China. The award was established with the approval of the National Office for Science & Technology Awards. It is a national scientific and technological award in the field of water conservancy, established and organised by the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society and approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. The awarded project was jointly conducted by CityUHK, the Pearl River Water Resources Research Institute, Hohai University, Guangdong Hydropower Planning & Design Institute Co., Ltd., and Guangzhou PRHRI Engineering Survey & Design Co., Ltd.

Led by Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution, the CityUHK team was responsible for the research task of enhancing the ecological functions and applications of urban seawalls in the project. The research team has established ecological theories that enhance habitat complexity and marine biodiversity and has developed various ecologically engineered features suitable for vertical and sloping artificial seawalls. Field tests have demonstrated that these ecologically engineered features can effectively and significantly enhance biodiversity and ecosystem functions on seawalls.

Professor Leung said, "We are very pleased to receive this honour together with the research teams from the Pearl River Water Resources Research Institute, among others. Winning the Dayu Award acknowledges our efforts in ecological restoration research and our support for the implementation of artificial ecological seawalls by the nation and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government."

Professor Leung also sincerely thanked the HKSAR Government’s Development Bureau and the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) for their trust and the valuable opportunities they provided for the research team to conduct trials of innovative products on artificial seawalls in Hong Kong over the years.

"The support from the Development Bureau and the CEDD has played a critical role throughout the research and development process, promoting product diversification and design optimisation," he added.

Mr Michael Fong Hok-shing, Director of Civil Engineering and Development, warmly congratulated the CityUHK team, "I am very pleased that the CityUHK team has been awarded the Dayu Award, which fully recognises their years of hard work and research achievements. To enhance the biodiversity of artificial seawalls and create a sustainable future, the CEDD will continue to actively promote the research and application of 'eco-shorelines', aiming to benefit the coastal ecosystems of Hong Kong and other cities in the Greater Bay Area," he said.

Since 2016, Professor Leung has collaborated closely with the HKSAR Government to develop and promote innovative technologies and applications for the implementation of eco-shorelines. With strong support from the Development Bureau and the CEDD, Professor Leung has tested, applied and optimised various innovative ecologically engineered features on multiple artificial seawalls in Hong Kong, including those in Ma Liu Shui, Sai Kung, Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Lamma Island and Lei Yue Mun. He also participated in designing a 3.8 km-long eco-shoreline in the Tung Chung East reclamation area on Lantau Island, where preliminary research data shows that the artificial eco-shoreline has attracted over 90 species of marine organisms, demonstrating its significant effectiveness.

The team established a start-up company, called afterNature, through CityUHK’s HK Tech 300 programme and developed a series of novel eco-engineered products, including eco-tiles, eco-panels, eco-blocks, tidal pools and armouring units, with the aim of promoting the transformation of research into widespread applications. These products have been adopted by the HKSAR Government and promoted in South Korea, Mainland China, the Middle East, and other regions.

Additionally, the CityUHK team’s "eco-tiles" invention has received numerous awards, including the Special Prize (Prize of the Korea Invention Promotion Association) and Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, as well as the Gold Medal in the Asia International Innovative Award at the 2023 Asia International Innovative Invention Exhibition, and the Gold Award at the Hong Kong Green Innovations Award as part of the 2022 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence. The research team recently collaborated with the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society and the Pearl River Water Resources Research Institute to establish group standards for "Technical Guide for Ecological Design of Sea Dike", paving the way for further establishing standards for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

CityUHK hosts the "Innovation@Community Carnival" at D2 Place ONE in Lai Chi Kok from 2 to 5 January.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has always been committed to innovation and actively engaging with the community to enhance the quality of life through innovative achievements. From 2 to 5 January, CityUHK hosted the "Innovation@Community Carnival" at D2 Place ONE in Lai Chi Kok. The event featured a series of exciting activities, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience the innovative spirit and achievements of the start-ups under the University’s flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme, HK Tech 300, as well as those of the University’s partners and CityUHK alumni, and to learn how these achievements contributed to the local community and addressed global challenges.

Mr Paul Wong Yan-yin, District Officer of Sham Shui Po; Ms Jenny Kwan, LAWSGROUP CFO (Manufacturing); Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, CityUHK Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise); and Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement), attended the opening ceremony on 3 January to witness the innovative achievements of CityUHK's collaboration with the community.

Professor Yang stated, "The ‘Innovation@Community Carnival’ provided a unique opportunity for everyone to experience firsthand how CityUHK's cutting-edge innovation and entrepreneurial spirit translate into impactful solutions that enhanced the quality of life. Through this event, we aimed to bring together start-ups, the University, and the public to drive a culture of innovation."

Mr Wong said, "This carnival is an excellent platform to showcase how innovation could meet societal needs while creating opportunities for interaction and collaboration within the Sham Shui Po district. I hope this carnival would inspire participants to explore new possibilities and ways of cooperation to address real-world challenges."

At the carnival, participants could also taste the fresh milk produced locally by CityUHK Farm. Professor Chan said, "CityUHK milk is the best example of how CityUHK translated scientific research into practical outcomes, reflecting our determination to promote community innovation and progress. CityUHK will continue to contribute its strengths to drive and support local community development to make a positive impact and contribution."

Building on this vision for community progress, a partner of CityUHK’s Institute of Digital Medicine (IDM) offered point-of-care health solutions, allowing visitors to quickly evaluate key health indicators. This effort underscored CityUHK’s dedication to advancing impactful innovations that promote community well-being.

The Carnival is filled with energy and creativity, featuring a game booth crafted by SCM alumni and captivating busking performances by talented students.

The four-day carnival was rich in activities and was divided into five exhibition areas – Education, Food, Healthcare, Lifestyle, and Sustainability – offering participants a unique experience. Each exhibition area was closely related to the daily life of the general public, combining cutting-edge technology and innovative ideas from laboratories into creative and effective solutions for the masses, bringing participants new perspectives and technological experiences.

Participants take part in STEAM workshops, including a coding session aimed at promoting computational thinking education and a VR inclusive sports workshop that fosters inclusivity through virtual reality.

The carnival also featured STEAM workshops, interactive games, lucky draws, and performances designed especially for students and families, including game booths designed by graduates of CityUHK's School of Creative Media (SCM). These engaging activities, hosted with the support of LAWSGROUP’s sponsorship of the venue, further strengthened the connection and engagement between CityUHK students and the community.

Visitors explore a range of innovations at the Carnival, including fast health tests, immersive digital experiences, and advanced glass coating solutions, along with other remarkable start-up displays.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) held the Award Ceremony for its HK Tech 300 Southeast Asia Start-up Competition (HK Tech 300 SEA Competition) on 27 June 2024. 10 start-ups from five countries across the Southeast Asia region and Hong Kong topped over 100 teams in the region, and were awarded Angel Fund investment of up to HK$1 million each from the University’s flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme, HK Tech 300.

CityUHK launched the HK Tech 300 SEA Competition in Kuala Lumpur in May 2023. Its aim is to support Southeast Asian start-ups expand their business to Hong Kong and the mainland, help Hong Kong start-ups explore opportunities in SEA, and attract overseas tech talent to the city. Over 100 start-ups, joined the competition through the partnering universities and incubators in the region.

Presiding over the Award Ceremony were Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government; Mr Lester Garson Huang, CityUHK Council Chairman; and Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President.

Mr Chen Yulin, Director of Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, and Mr Victor Hui, Acting Consul General of Singapore in the HKSAR also attended the ceremony.

“Hong Kong is always one of the best destinations for global start-ups to thrive. With the interactive collaboration between the Government, industry, academic and research sectors, we have introduced a series of initiatives to create a vibrant innovation and technology (I&T) ecosystem and a favourable business environment over the past years. That makes it a golden opportunity for global start-ups to start or expand their business in the city,” said Professor Sun. He also recognised the contribution of HK Tech 300 in supporting and nurturing tech start-ups and talents in Hong Kong and the region.

Mr Huang expressed his congratulations to the 10 outstanding start-ups. “The competition attracted some of the most inspiring innovations and young entrepreneurs in the region. This reinforces our vision of cultivating talent and shaping a society driven by I&T advancement beyond boundaries,” said Mr Huang. “This is also aligned with the national strategy and the Government’s aim to develop Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub.

President Boey says the Competition presents a unique opportunity to foster cross-sector and cross-border collaboration among top academic institutions and incubators in the region.

President Boey said he was delighted to witness the winning start-ups utilising CityUHK technology to advance their tech products and services. He pointed out that CityUHK is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and remains committed to fostering inspirational, interactive, and innovative education, enabling CityUHK to make a significant contribution to the world by generating ground-breaking research and innovative solutions to address pressing global challenges.

He also expressed his heartfelt thanks to CityUHK’s partners in making the competition a success. “The Competition presents a unique opportunity to foster collaboration among top academic institutions and incubators in the region,” he said. We will continue our efforts to create a thriving I&T ecosystem through more cross-discipline, cross-sector and cross-region collaboration.”

The 10 winning start-ups, from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Hong Kong, are experts in advanced technology fields, such as fintech, deep tech, biotech & health, and ICT & AI. These promising start-ups provide cutting-edge solutions for a wide range of industries, including digital healthcare, energy sustainability, green materials, digital assets and real estate.

Together with the angel funding, the awarded start-ups will receive extensive support. This includes professional services and business matching for potential co-investment opportunities in the HK Tech 300 ecosystem. They will also gain access to CityUHK’s world-class research achievements and intellectual property for advancing their technologies. This comprehensive support will provide a significant boost on their entrepreneurial journey.

The HK Tech 300 SEA Competition was held in partnership with universities and incubators in the region, including Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Chulalongkorn University from Thailand, Universitas Gadjah Mada from Indonesia, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (SIDEC), Sunwah Innovation Center from Vietnam, and various chambers of commerce. It helps start-ups enter Hong Kong and the mainland markets by leveraging the city’s unique advantages and resources. It also promotes the University’s technology transfer and commercialisation, fostering closer ties between the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems in Hong Kong and the region.

About HK Tech 300

Under the theme “Venture Beyond Boundaries”, HK Tech 300 is a large-scale flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme launched by CityUHK for aspiring entrepreneurs among the CityUHK students, alumni, research staff and others to establish start-ups and ignite their entrepreneurship journey. City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) held the HK Tech 300 National Start-up Competition (National Competition) 2nd Award Ceremony and the Launch of the 3rd Competition on 1 September at CityUHK (Dongguan). Twelve start-ups from Hong Kong and the nine mainland cities out of 400 participating teams were awarded for their innovative solutions for a wide range of industries, including digital healthcare, energy sustainability and artificial intelligence applications. The 3rd Competition expands to 12 mainland cities including Dongguan, Hangzhou and Xi’an for a more robust and wider area innovation development.

Together with angel funding of up to HK$1 million each, the winning start-ups will receive extensive support, including professional training, business networking and investment matching from the HK Tech 300 ecosystem. The 12 winning start-ups delivered their final pitches at the ceremony. Receiving the Gold Award was Beijing Rising IC Co., Ltd., which focuses on the R&D of chip-level micro-actuators. The judges also unveiled the awards of Silver, Bronze, “Technology Innovation” and “Best Social Impact”.

Presiding over the 2nd Competition Award Ceremony and the Launch of the 3rd Competition was Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise) of CityUHK. Officiating at the ceremony included Ms Li Jun, Deputy Mayor of the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government. Guests from the 12 mainland cities in the 3rd Competition joined the ceremony, including Mr Chen Xu, Deputy Director of the Chengdu Science and Technology Bureau, and Ms Yang Chan, Deputy Director of the Changsha Science and Technology Bureau and more.

Professor Yang congratulated the award winners, saying, “Technology should be used by people and should be able to contribute to social development.

CityUHK will continue to synergise the strengths and resources of Hong Kong and the mainland through HK Tech 300, translating the University’s research achievements into innovative solutions to tackle pressing challenges in Hong Kong, the mainland and the rest of the world,” said Professor Yang. “We aim to build a more robust start-up ecosystem on both sides to further bolster the development of Hong Kong as an international I&T hub and inject new impetus into the country’s ‘new quality productive forces’.”

CityUHK organised its first National Competition in June 2022 and launched the second one in mid-July 2023, covering nine clusters in the mainland: Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen Chengdu, Changsha, Qingdao, Suzhou and Wuxi. The third competition will be expanded to 12 cities, including Dongguan, Hangzhou and Xi'an, and allow start-ups from Hong Kong to join the competition, further promoting innovation and talent collaboration.

At the same event, CityUHK co-hosted the plaque-unveiling ceremony of the “City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) Technology and Innovation Center” (the Center). The Center will take advantage of CityUHK’s world-class research capabilities and Dongguan’s industrial superiority to establish a university–industry integrated innovation system. The Center will form a bridge between Dongguan and Hong Kong to support HK Tech 300 start-ups to set up and develop in Dongguan, attracting outstanding start-ups from at home and abroad. This will foster the innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial development of the two cities, thereby enhancing the international competitiveness of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

“CityUHK is a bridge to synergise the innovative resources of Dongguan and Hong Kong. It enhances the collaboration of Hong Kong’s scientific research achievements with Dongguan’s strengths in research, industry support and costs. This fosters a more robust environment for technological collaboration, nurtures and supports more innovative talent and projects, and encourages cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and the mainland.” Ms Li said.

The HK Tech 300 National Start-up Competition 2nd Award Ceremony and the Launch of the 3rd Competition was one of celebratory events of the Grand opening of CityUHK (Dongguan).
