CityUHK held an opening and naming ceremony for the Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village on 6 December. City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) held an opening and naming ceremony for the Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village on 6 December, marking a milestone for the University’s development in terms of striving to create a high-quality education and living environment for students.

Dr the Hon Lee Shau-kee, Founder of Henderson Land Group, has consistently supported CityUHK’s development. He has been a long-standing supporter of CityUHK since 2006. Student Residence Hall 6 at CityUHK was named Lee Shau Kee Hall, in appreciation of the support and generous donations from Dr Lee. In 2018, Dr Lee made a significant donation through Lee Shau Kee Foundation to support the long-term development of the University. In honour of Dr Lee’s generosity, the Student Hostel at Whitehead, Ma On Shan is named as Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Lester Garson Huang, CityUHK Council Chairman, expressed his deep gratitude to Dr Lee for his continuous support and generosity to the University. “Dr Lee has shown his vision and enthusiasm to the development of the education sector and the nurturing of young people in Hong Kong, on the mainland and overseas continuously for decades,” he said.

CityUHK present a souvenir to Henderson Land, expressing gratitude for their and Lee Shau Kee Foundation’s continuous support and generous donations.

“Dr Lee’s spirit of nurturing young talents aligns perfectly with CityUHK’s philosophy of driving positive social change and energy through innovation. Over the years, Dr Lee’s donation has made significant impact to the University’s development, including naming two Chair Professorship, naming one Professorship, and providing various exchange scholarships and scholarships for academic outstanding students,” he added.

Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President, also expressed his gratitude to Dr Lee for his donation and to his family members in particular Dr Martin Lee Ka-shing and Henderson Land Group, for their continuous support for the University. “The unwavering support of Dr Lee has empowered CityUHK to provide more resources to advance our long-term development to nurture the next generation through inspirational, interactive and innovative learning,” he said. “The opening of the student village today is a very special moment for CityUHK because this year not only marks the 30th anniversary of the University, but also we have the most student applications among the eight UGC-funded universities, which shows our continuous efforts to nurture the next generation.”

Dr Martin Lee Ka-shing, Chairman of Henderson Land Group, said at the ceremony, “I am thrilled to celebrate the opening of the Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village. The Lee Shau Kee Foundation has been supporting education for decades, both locally and globally, and Henderson Land shares this commitment. The Village serves not just as a building, but as a crucible for creativity and inspiration, as well as a collaborative space where ideas can take flight. Today, as we open the doors to this new residence, we are also unlocking limitless possibilities for our students to innovate, inspire, and build the future.”

Located in Whitehead, Ma On Shan, the Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village was opened in the third quarter of 2024 after commencing the construction work in 2022, providing more than 2,000 bed-spaces for CityUHK’s students. The Student Residence Village has adopted advanced construction technology called Modular Integrated Construction (MiC), which involves over 1,300 modules in the overall building complex. In addition to hostel rooms, there will be communal rooms, corridors, toilets and plant rooms constructed using MiC.

Additionally, CityUHK is committed to building a sustainable future and championing a green environment. The Student Residence Village has adopted several green elements that promote sustainable living and explore smart living technologies. For instance, 110 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the residential tower blocks will save energy and electricity costs; and a cost-effective building management system will generate real-time data for overall building maintenance, among others.

Donors supporting new Named Chair Professorship Scheme

Distinguished donors and academics attended the Named Chair Professorships inauguration ceremony at CityU.

The first-ever inauguration ceremony for Named Chair Professorships at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 11 October honoured distinguished scholars for their outstanding achievements and paid tribute to our generous donors.

The Named Chair Professorship Scheme has made promising progress since its launch under the theme “Together · Research Beyond Boundaries”. More than 20 named Chair Professorships and Professorships have been established within just a few years. Eighteen of those officially appointed academics attended the ceremony.

The Named Chair Professorships established so far are having a multigenerational impact on various academic disciplines as well as on our community and the world at large.

Officiating at the ceremony were Dr Chung Shui-ming, Pro-Chancellor, Mr Lester Garson Huang, Council Chairman, and President Way Kuo.

“The Named Chair Professorships represent one of the highest honours that we can bestow on academic staff and will be a lasting tribute to donors, whose names will be prominently associated with the named scholars and their ongoing good work. This is a meaningful joint endeavour that will advance the frontiers of knowledge,” Mr Huang said in his welcome address.

“The Scheme marks an important milestone in our journey. It reinforces our aspiration to become a leading global university that excels in research and professional education and shows our appreciation to our donors,” President Kuo said.

The Named Chair Professorships cover a broad array of disciplines under the five major interdisciplinary research areas outlined in CityU's Strategic Plan 2020–2025, ranging from architecture, behavioural and policy sciences, biomedical sciences, business, e-learning, energy and environment, engineering, and materials science to One Health and veterinary medicine.

Professor Tinly Wong Tin-chee, Founder and Executive Director of Herbalgy Pharmaceutical Limited, Executive Director of Wong To Yick Wood Lock Ointment Limited, Member of the Board of Governors and Honorary Patron of the CityUHK Foundation, made a renewed donation to establish the first Named Presidential Assistant Professorship via the CityUHK Endowment Campaign for supporting the scholarly and research activities of young talented faculty members in the field of human health.

The Presidential Assistant Professors Scheme is one of the latest initiatives of CityUHK to recruit and retain outstanding global talent and foster the long-term career development of young scholars at the University. It provides a competitive platform for attracting exceptional young researchers from diverse academic backgrounds with the potential to become world-class scholars and academic leaders at the University.

Prof Wong has not only staunchly supported CityUHK but has also demonstrated a deep care for the health and well-being of students. Outstanding law students awarded the Chau Sin Wo Scholarships

Three undergraduates in the School of Law are awarded the Chau Sin Wo Scholarship this year: (from left) Wong Tsz-hei, Lam Tsz-ho and Yu Hanqing (1st right).

The first award ceremony for the Chau Sin Wo Scholarships for the School of Law of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) was held in March to commend outstanding undergraduate law students. Three students won the award this year.

The Chau Sin Wo Scholarships for the School of Law are generously donated by Ms Chau Sin-wo, who established an endowment fund at CityUHK to work with the University to cultivate talent.

Lam Tsz-ho, one of the recipients of the first Chau Sin Wo Scholarships, sincerely thanked Ms Chau for her generous donation, which gave him the opportunity to pursue his dream. He said he believed that the scholarship would give hope to aspiring students by knowing that there are philanthropists who are willing to give a helping hand for them to realise their dreams.

Born in Sichuan, Ms Chau had a difficult childhood. She came to Hong Kong in the 1980s and started working as a domestic helper. She worked hard and strived for success despite the hardship. Never discouraged while facing difficulties in life, she eventually ran a successful textile export business and changed her destiny.

Ms Chau shared her regret about not receiving a formal education during her childhood. Because of this, she set up scholarships to help more students develop their talent with virtue and capability. She said she deeply feels CityUHK’s passion and ambition regarding education and agreed with the University’s emphasis on cultivating students’ sense of social responsibility.

In addition to generously setting up an endowment fund for CityUHK students to cultivate talent, Ms Chau listed CityUHK as a beneficiary in her will, thus fully supporting the long-term development of the students and the University. She will also promote CityUHK’s Endowment Campaign to her relatives and friends.

Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President, expressed his sincere gratitude to Ms Chau on behalf of CityUHK. He praised her visionary act of setting up scholarships through the endowment fund to encourage students to pursue academic excellence.

CityUHK marks a significant milestone of its 30th anniversary this year. One of its important initiatives is the “CityUHK Endowment Campaign”, which aims to raise sustainable resources to support the University’s long-term development.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted the naming ceremony for the Yip Kit Chuen Building on 3 October. The building is named after Dr Yip Kit-chuen, a prominent industrialist and entrepreneur in Hong Kong, in appreciation of his generous donations to the University’s development and research to nurture future talent.

Dr Yip, Chairman of GEW Holdings Limited, is a renowned Hong Kong industry leader. He has been enthusiastic about serving the community and has been actively involved in charitable activities. Over the years, he has dedicated himself to promoting technology and education in both Hong Kong and the mainland, tirelessly nurturing talent to give back to society. Dr Yip’s outstanding achievements have been widely recognised by various sectors of society. He received the World Outstanding Chinese Award in 2006 and the Industrialist of the Year Award in 2017. He was conferred the title of Honorary Fellow by CityUHK in 2019 in recognition of his remarkable contributions to education and social service.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Lester Garson Huang, CityUHK Council Chairman, said that Dr Yip has maintained close ties with CityUHK and has consistently supported the University’s development, adding that CityUHK was very honoured to once again receive a generous donation from Dr Yip. “Dr Yip’s entrepreneurial spirit of pursuing innovation and being courageous in exploration aligns perfectly with CityUHK’s philosophy of driving beneficial social change through innovation,” he said. “I firmly believe that Dr Yip’s success story will inspire more young people to pursue innovation, bringing more positive changes and energy to the world.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Yip emphasised that giving back to society is a responsibility and that he believes that education is a force for social change and that every student has the potential to become a future leader. He hoped his donation would help promote strategic development and research at CityUHK, as well as nurture talent, and emphasised his strong confidence in CityUHK.

He also encouraged students with his own experience. “I started my business at the age of 23,” he said. “My journey was full of challenges and opportunities and involved a great deal of effort and dedication. I hope my experience inspires CityUHK students not to give up easily when facing problems if they want to achieve success.”

Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President, expressed his gratitude to Dr Yip for his generosity and to Dr Yip’s family, including his son, Dr Daniel Yip Chung-yin, for their continuous support for the University. “The unwavering support of Dr Yip and his family has empowered CityUHK to provide more resources to advance our development and research initiatives and to nurture CityUHK Heroes through inspirational, interactive and innovative learning, thus helping our students realise their dreams,” he said. “We are also positioned to achieve significant breakthroughs in multidisciplinary research in various fields, creating a promising future for the next generation.”

In 2018, Student Residence Hall 8 at CityUHK was named Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall, in appreciation of the support and generous donations from Dr and Mrs Yip Kit-chuen. Dr Yip is also an Honorary Patron of the CityUHK Foundation. The Yip Kit Chuen Building serves as the administrative building of CityUHK and has a newly installed elevator lobby to facilitate access for the CityUHK community.

CityUHK representatives and attending guests witness the official naming of “Benjamin & Anny Kwok Conference Room”.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted the naming ceremony for the Benjamin & Anny Kwok Conference Room on 4 October, on the 4/F of the Yip Kit Chuen Building, in recognition of alumnus Mr Benjamin Kwok, Managing Director of Kwonnie Electrical Products Limited, and his family's steadfast support for the University.

Mr Kwok is a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s electrical industry and is deeply connected with CityUHK. His ties with CityUHK date back to 2003, when he launched a manufacturing enterprise management programme in collaboration with CityUHK. He sponsored members of the management echelon of his company to enrol in a postgraduate programme in management at CityUHK.

Mr Kwok graduated from the University’s EMBA programme in 2007 and has since become an active alumnus, supporting the University’s development for many years. He is an Honorary President and Board Member of the CityUHK Foundation, a founding member of CityUHK’s Eminence Society, and a member of the CityUHK Industrial and Business Leaders Circle. He was also conferred the title of Honorary Fellow in 2017 in recognition of his distinctive contributions to the development of, and service to, the University and the community.

The naming ceremony on 4 October was attended by Mr and Mrs Kwok and their family and friends; Mr Lester Garson Huang, CityUHK Council Chairman; Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President; Professor Kevin Downing, Secretary to the Council; Professor Li Wen Jung, Vice-President (Talent and International Strategy); Professor Chan Chi Hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement); Professor Anderson Shum, Vice-President (Research); Ms Kathy Chan, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations); and other CityUHK management members, alumni and faculty.

Mr Huang praises Mr Kwok for his achievements in his career and contribution to society.

In his speech, Mr Huang praised Mr Kwok for his achievements in his career and contribution to society. “Mr Kwok is a leading figure in Hong Kong’s electrical industry,” said Mr Huang. “He adheres to the principle of ‘taking from society and giving back to society’, serving in various public positions in his spare time and enthusiastically serving the community. Mr Kwok’s dedication and support for the University fully reflect his outstanding spirit as an alumnus and his commitment to education to benefit society.”

President Boey expresses his heartiest gratitude for Mr Kwok’s support to his alma mater.

President Boey thanked Mr Kwok for his enthusiastic support for CityUHK through various channels over the years. In addition to generously supporting the University’s development, he supports University research projects, provides scholarships and internship opportunities. “Mr Kwok is a successful business leader, who actively contributes to the community and balances his work and family commitments,” said President Boey. “His positive outlook and profound vision for the path to success also perfectly embody the CityUHK spirit.”

At the naming ceremony, Mr Huang along with President Boey jointly presented a souvenir to Mr and Mrs. Kwok as a token of appreciation. The gift was a couplet inspired by Mr Kwok’s name, honouring his success in his career and life through hard work and the pursuit of excellence, and for being a shining role model for the younger generation.

Mr Kwok encourages more alumni and community leaders to support CityUHK’s development.

In his speech, Mr Kwok thanked CityUHK for providing an ideal platform for further studies, which inspired his passion for lifelong learning. He mentioned that after completing CityUHK’s EMBA programme, he successfully combined the knowledge he acquired with his years of business experience, introducing innovative management models that led to the flourishing development of his company’s business. He said, “I am very proud to be a CityUHK alumnus; being able to give back to my alma mater and help younger students develop is exceptionally meaningful to me.”

Mr Kwok encouraged more alumni and community leaders to support CityUHK’s development and to work together to promote the university’s pursuit of excellence and benefit society.
