The article ‘Open standing castration in Thoroughbred racehorses in Hong Kong: Prevalence and severity of complications 30 days post-castration’ by Dr Rosanowski (Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health) et al. has been selected by the Clinical Reviewer of the Equine Veterinary Journal as one of the most clinically relevant to appear on its Early View section this month. The Equine Veterinary Journal (EVJ) is widely acclaimed as the strongest international equine science journal and boasts a strong global readership.

The article describes a study of complications following open standing castration (OSC) in Thoroughbred racehorses in Hong Kong.

The study found that complications following OSC in horses in Hong Kong were common, however, the majority were mild and were successfully treated using antimicrobials and simple wound management. The severity of complication did not adversely affect the subsequent ability of the horse to race but given the high rate of complications and antimicrobial usage identified in this study, a review of the technique is warranted.
