Since 2010, Prof. Pfeiffer (Chair Professor of One Health at the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health) has directed and taught the two-year China Field Epidemiology Training Course for Veterinarians (CFETPV) together with colleagues from Royal Veterinary College (RVC), London. Dirk visited Qingdao, China, in July 2017 to deliver a CFETPV training module on surveillance and in October 2017 to deliver one on integration of epidemiological methods. The CFETPV is funded by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is co-delivered by international and Chinese trainers from the Royal Veterinary College, the Ministry for Primary Industries of New Zealand, City University of Hong Kong, FAO China Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) Office, China Animal Health and Epidemiology Centre (CAHEC) and various other Chinese organisations. The course seeks to improve animal and public health by training veterinarians in scientific risk based approaches to the control of transboundary animal diseases and emerging infectious diseases. It fulfils a key role in developing epidemiology capacity in China’s veterinary service. The CFETPV has up until now trained 133 veterinarians from 31 Chinese provinces and five national institutes in a one-month introductory epidemiology course, held every 2 years. From this larger group, a subset of 81 veterinarians (divided into cohorts of about 20) participated in the 2-year CFETPV training program. From these CFETPV graduates, 15 are now involved as trainers and have been trained in teaching methods. CFETPV trainees have carried out 167 short training courses, reaching over 10,000 people, at their workplaces. In addition, 5 CFETPV-Executive training courses have been held for senior staff from Chinese provinces and national animal health agencies to sensitize them for the utility of epidemiology capacity within their organisations. CFETPV trainees have conducted over 60 outbreak investigations, 120 epidemiological studies and many case studies, posters and conference presentations, based on animal health problems relevant to China.
