International Seminar for Veterinary Epidemiology Development & the 3rd Regional Meeting to Support and Sustain Veterinary Epidemiology Capacity

Prof. Dirk Pfeiffer (Chair Professor of One Health) recently attended the ‘International Seminar of Veterinary Epidemiology Development & the 3rd Regional Meeting to Support and Sustain Veterinary Epidemiology Capacity’ on 26-28 September 2017, Qingdao, P.R. China.

The meeting was organised by the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center (CAHEC), the Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture China and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Its aim was to share experiences and lessons learned among countries in the region and discuss key elements for the support of effective integration of veterinary epidemiological approaches as part of governmental animal health service delivery.

The participants included the Chief / Deputy Chief Veterinary Officers or other senior government animal health managers of 13 Asian countries, including China. Other participants represented regional organisations (ASEAN, SAARC), development partners (City University of Hong Kong/China, Murdoch University/Australia, Ministry for Primary Industries/New Zealand), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Also participating were Chinese representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center (CAHEC), the China Animal Disease Control Centre (ACDC), various Chinese provincial veterinary authorities, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) and several Chinese universities.

The meeting consisted of oral and poster presentations, panel discussions, facilitated working group discussions and facilitated plenary discussions.

Prof. Pfeiffer gave a keynote presentation: ’Veterinary epidemiology for better animal health policies – A personal perspective’.
