Prof. Reichel (Chair Professor of Veterinary Medicine) and Dr Hill (Director of the CityU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory), together with an Australian colleague, reviewed the history and current situation of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) in Australia and New Zealand.

BVDV was first reported in both countries nearly 60 years ago, it is widespread in the beef and dairy industries and is the second most economically significant disease occurring in cattle. Many other countries have implemented eradication programmes. However, both Australia and New Zealand are currently relying on non-compulsory control schemes, initiated and managed by farmers and veterinarians, and are not aiming for eradication of the disease.

Given the infrastructure in both countries, eradication is possible but only with additional resources, coordination and funding from stakeholders.
