Trade, migration and the internet - these are just some of the powerful forces driving globalisation.
And an international education is crucial to navigating this increasingly interconnected world.
Across the dynamic landscape of higher education, one university stands out for its unique perspective: City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has once again been named the most international university in the world by Times Higher Education (THE).
Beating out the likes of Cambridge University, Oxford University, and Imperial College London, which all finished in the top five, CityUHK distinguished itself through its "significant proportion of international students and faculty", its "proactive involvement in collaborative global research projects", and its "strong global standing, as evidenced by its reputation", according to THE.
International Faculty and Recognitions
For more than 30 years, a standout feature of CityUHK has been its commitment to fostering an international community.
With over half of the faculty hailing from overseas, the university provides a diverse and enriching academic environment. The acknowledgement of 27 faculty members as Highly Cited Researchers for 2023 by Clarivate further solidifies CityUHK's position on the global academic stage, ranking 44th worldwide, 10th in Asia, and 2nd in Hong Kong.
"We aspire to be a globally recognised university, one that Hong Kong can be immensely proud of," said President Freddy Boey, adding that he encourages CityUHK students to become global citizens, not just university graduates.
Global Partnerships and Exchanges
CityUHK's commitment to international collaboration is evident in its extensive network of more than 400 exchange partners spanning 44 countries or regions. Remarkably, about 65% of its undergraduates actively participate in exchange programmes, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
The university's recent collaborations with prestigious institutions like the University of Glasgow, University of Surrey, and Imperial College London, underscore its dedication to fostering global academic ties.
Elsewhere, CityUHK's Cultural Exchange Oasis (CXO) exemplifies its dedication to inclusivity by celebrating diverse traditions and heritages from around the world. In the coming year, CXO will showcase Kazakhstan's rich cultural tapestry through exhibits featuring Kazakh yurts, costumes, and musical instruments.
"As proud ambassadors for Hong Kong, we will continue to reach out to partners and friends overseas," President Boey said.
Complex Ranking Criteria
But how does THE, recognised globally as one of the most trusted authorities on higher education, determine the most international university in the world?
The process involves a comprehensive evaluation of over 1,900 universities worldwide, with THE considering metrics
such as international student and staff scores, international co-authorship scores, and global reputation indicators.
In this rigorous assessment, only 203 universities from 36 countries and territories earned a place on the list, with CityUHK coming first for its significant proportion of international students and faculty, proactive involvement in global research projects, and strong global standing.
Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences
CityUHK's global reputation also extends to the field of veterinary medicine and life sciences.
The establishment of Hong Kong's first and only college of veterinary medicine is a testament to the institution's commitment to advancing healthcare. The accreditation received from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council in September 2023 further highlights the excellence of CityUHK's veterinary medicine undergraduate programme, making it the only accredited bachelor's programme in Asia by these two major regulatory bodies.
Future Endeavours and Celebrations
As CityUHK celebrates its 30th anniversary, the future looks more exciting than ever.
The establishment of an Academy of Innovation reflects the university's commitment to nurturing young entrepreneurs and fostering deep-tech start-ups.
The International Centre, which is nearing completion, will provide a space to bring people together for lectures, events and socialising with its meeting rooms and outdoor areas including an amphitheatre.
In line with its dedication to global health and sustainability, CityUHK will also host the One Health Global Summit early next year. The summit will bring together international experts in animal, environmental, and human health to address shared health challenges and promote optimal outcomes for the planet.
In conclusion, City University of Hong Kong's recognition as the "Most International University in the World" is a testament to its unwavering commitment to global excellence in education, research, and cultural exchange.
Such an education serves as a gateway to diverse perspectives, while fostering cultural understanding and equipping young people with the skills needed to thrive in the modern world.
It goes beyond textbooks, offering a first-hand experience of different cultures, languages, and ways of thinking, preparing students to thrive in a dynamic and interconnected professional landscape.
In an era where collaboration knows no borders, an international education is not just an asset - it's a prerequisite for success in the 21st Century.
