The Research Centre for Mathematical Sciences at CityU was established by Professor Roderick S. C. Wong in 1995. Officially named the Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences (LBJ Centre) in 1997, the dedication reflected the donor's generous support for academic developments in mathematics.
Since then, the Centre has taken great strides, making substantial contributions to applied mathematical sciences, regularly organising international conferences and workshops, high level distinguished lectures, a bi-weekly colloquium, public and internal seminars.
The primary mission of the Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences is to conduct first-class research in applied mathematics and in computational mathematics. As a leading research centre in the Asia-Pacific region, its basic objective is to strive for excellence in applied mathematical sciences.
To this end, it consistently attracts eminent visiting scientists from all over the world, it regularly organizes international mathematics conferences and workshops, half-year programs, and weekly colloquia, it actively seeks mathematical and computational problems arising in industry and financial sectors, and it supports the publication of journal articles, books, preprint series and lecture notes series. It also plays a leading role in attracting outside funding and donations for the purpose of enhancing research in applied mathematical sciences.
