Localized Resonance Approach to
Creating Wave Functional Materials

Abstract: I give a review of the localized resonance approach to wave functional materials, with examples in locally resonant sonic materials and planar metallic fractals. Local resonance approach is a fundamentally different approach than the Bragg scattering approach to phononic and photonic crystals. In contrast to the Bragg scattering approach, here the bandgap frequency is decoupled from the lattice constant or feature size of the structure. Hence the overall structure can be subwavelength in size, implying advantages in sonic and microwave applications. Also, the local resonance approach does not require periodicity in the structures, which translates into robustness of the effect and ease in fabrication.
