Instabilities in Stress-induced Phase Transitions in

ABSTRACT: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are a group of fascinating materials which can undergo a diffusionless transformation between two solid phases: a high symmetry austenite phase and a low symmetry martensite phase. These materials have numerical applications in medical technology, automotive and aerospace industries, etc. Various instability phenomena in stress-induced phase transitions in SMAs have been found in experiments. To describe these instabilities mathematically are challenging, since one needs to study the bifurcations/post-bifurcations of solutions of complicated coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. In this talk, I shall report some analytical results for certain interesting instabilities in thin/slender SMA structures obtained through a methodology of coupled series-asymptotic expansions developed by us.
