Students taking the postgraduate course, SEE5114 Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, offered by the School participated in a visit to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum on 7 March 2015 (Saturday).  The visit started with a guided tour to the museum which is divided into three floors, namely A, B and C-Deck.  Deck A is the Navigation Gallery showing the Maritime Communications, Navigation and Meteorology technologies.  During the visit at B and C-Decks, students explored a wide variety of maritime themes from safety on the sea to the underwater world.  The Museum also covers issues relating to the future use of oceans, which cover 70% of the earth’s surface and contain much of its biodiversity as well as rich resources, as yet little explored. Special topics concerning climate change, pollution, conservation and international cooperation were introduced together with some of the contemporary issues. Shipping, being important to the development of Hong Kong, is today a global business which occupies 90% of the world’s trade, much of what we use in our daily life.

Students also visited the Special Exhibition at B-Desk named ‘Made in Hong Kong’, which is a lively, interactive exhibition about our city.  It presents Hong Kong through the stories of the people, trade and industries which have underpinned the dynamic growth of the city. Food Waste Biorefinery research developed by Dr. Carol Lin’s group was also one of the displays in the Innovation and Technology Section at this exhibition.
