Using neutron scattering technique as the main research tool, Prof. BAO has investigated a variety of frontier issues of correlated electronic systems in condensed matter, including the Mott metal-insulator transition, colossal magnetoresistivity, orbital ordering, re-entrant spin-glass state, itinerant antiferromagnetism, low-dimensional quantum antiferromagnetism and unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion, cuprate and iron-based materials, often under extreme condition at low temperature, high pressure and high magnetic field. His works have led to more than 200 invited talks in US, Europe and Asia.

Previous Experience

  • 2009 - 2019, Distinguished University Professor, Renmin University of China. Teaching and mentoring graduate students and postdoc. Neutron scattering investigation on the Fe-based superconductors and some other correlated electronic materials. Design and construction of two complimentary novel cold-neutron inelastic spectrometers at China Advanced Research Reactor in Beijing as a major scientific infrastructure project of NSF of China.
  • 1998 - 2009, Technical Staff Member, Los Alamos National Laboratory. Neutron scattering investigation on heavy fermion, cuprate and Fe-based unconventional superconductors, and on spin-valve effect and other correlated electronic effects in ruthenates and colbaltates. Mentoring Postdocs and PhD thesis students.
  • 1995 - 1998, Research Associate, Brookhaven National Laboratory. Neutron scattering investigations on charge and orbital occupation ordering, and its fundamental influence on Mott transition, double-exchange and superexchange in manganites and vanadium oxides; on re-entrant spin-glass, uncovering its “unphysical” mysteries; the first quantitative validation of the Moriya theory on itinerant antiferromagnestism.
  • Jul 1994 - Dec 1994, Consultant, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ. Synthesis and characterization of manganites samples and investigation on their colossal magnetoresistivity.
