Biography
Dr Rebecca Parkes is an equine clinician, and graduated from the Royal Veterinary College with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. She was awarded a PhD in equine locomotor biomechanics,
supported by a scholarship from the Horserace Betting Levy Board in 2015. Rebecca moved to Hong Kong to work at the Hong Kong Jockey Club in 2015 where she provided veterinary care for the 600 horses engaged in equestrian sport in Hong Kong, and was involved with the rehabilitation of retired racehorses.
Rebecca has since worked at CityU as an Assistant Professor, where she developed the BVM's Veterinary Practice courses and the clinical skills laboratory, and furthered her interest in veterinary education and equine welfare. She then worked as Associate Professor at St George's University, Grenada, before returning to the Hong Kong Jockey Club in 2024 as Executive Manager for Mainland Veterinary Engagement. She is now developing educational programmes for equine clinicians in Mainland China and is passionate about promoting improved equine welfare via veterinary education.
Rebecca's key research interests are veterinary education, equine welfare, equine lameness and equine locomotor biomechanics. She has authored over 25 scientific articles and three book chapters on these topics. Rebecca is also a member of the Equestrian Federation of Hong Kong, China's Training and Selection Subcommittee, Technical Advisor to the Veterinary and Medical Committee of the China Horse Industry Association and a member of the Research Committee of the Equitarian Initiative.
