In the lecture, we will go over some history of cancer facts and research that leads to recent advances of cancer treatment. Several successful stories of target therapy and their impact on cancer patients will be discussed. In addition, we will introduce: 1) most recent advanced cancer therapy including immune check point and PARP inhibitors therapy; 2) current challenge for the resistance to cancer therapy; and 3) ideal treatment for cancer patients such as precision medicine in the future. We will also share the MD Anderson experience on the “Moon Shot Program “initiatives” for Making Cancer History?.
Professor Hung Mien-chie is a molecular biologist and cancer researcher. He currently is the Vice President for Basic Research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Huston, Texas. He also serves as a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Oncology.
Professor Hung received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry and biochemistry from National Taiwan University. He earned his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from Brandeis University, in the United States. In 1984, he worked at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of a world renowned molecular biologist, Dr. Robert A. Weinberg.
Professor Hung was elected as a member of the Taiwan's Academia Sinica in 2002. In 2006, he became the honorary director of Center for Molecular Medicine of China Medical University Hospital and a distinguished professor. Since 2010, he was elected as a Fellow of section of Biological Sciences at American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the Full Member at Scientific Advisory Council, Susan G Komen.
