Frequently Asked Questions relating to LC Courses

  1. To whom are LC courses offered?

    LC courses are currently offered to students of undergraduate degree programmes at the City University of Hong Kong Kong (CityU). Certain courses may also be open to inbound exchange students and participants of the Elder Academy.

    Additionally, there is a mechanism through which CityU faculty and staff members can apply for approval to attend LC courses with the approval of their respective department heads. This entails soliciting approval from the applicant's head of department and making an application via AIMS (under Staff-Services/Staff Development/City U's credit-bearing courses).

  2. How can I register for a course?

    You may make use of the course registration function in AIMS for registration of our courses. For further details relating to the timeline, policies and procedures of online course registration, please refer to the website of the Academic Regulations and Record Office.

    Please note that some LC courses may have prerequisite, such as completion of a previous course or demonstration of a certain level of language proficiency. Other courses some may require students to complete a placement test before enrolment. You may refer to the note on the Master Class Schedule in AIMS or contact our Centre for more information.

  3. Can I apply for late add/drop of courses?

    All late course add/drop applications are subject to approval by the LC on an individual basis at the LC's sole discretion, and such approval will only be granted under exceptional circumstances with the provision of appropriate supporting documentation.

    You may apply for late add/drop a course offered by the LC after the University’s course add/drop period via the online form HERE and notify our General Office via language.centre@cityu.edu.hk upon completion of the form. No late course add/drop applications will be accepted on or after the last day of instruction of the course.

    Note: Students who intend to apply for late course drop are strongly recommended to study the LC Guidelines for Approving Late Course Drop before submitting an application.

  4. What should I do if I cannot attend an assessment?

    If you are unable to attend an assessment / examination due to extenuating circumstances such as illness, hospitalization, accident, family bereavement or other unforeseeable serious personal or emotional circumstances, you need to inform your home academic unit offering the programme that you are enrolled in, by submitting a mitigation request via AIMS (or if you are a student from the College of Business, the College of Business Online Mitigation Request System) as soon as possible and within five (5) working days after the assessment / examination. Please include the relevant supporting documents that substantiate the extenuating circumstance .

    Subject to the approval of your home academic unit, our Centre will determine whether a make-up assessment / examination will be arranged for you. If you have any questions, you may refer to the website of the Academic Regulations and Record Office or contact your home academic unit directly.

  5. Can I apply for a grade review?

    If you believe there was an administrative error in recording or calculating the mark or result, or other circumstances that impact the course grade awarded, you may apply for informal course grade review by completing the application form HERE. The completed application form should be submitted to our General Office at language.centre@cityu.edu.hk no later than five (5) working days from the announcement of the course grade, and no late applications will be accepted.

    Upon receipt of your completed application form, the LC General Office will communicate with you regarding the outcome of your application within thirteen (13) working days. For further details regarding the rules and regulations relating to course grade review, you may refer to the website of the Academic Regulations and Records Office.

  6. Can I apply for course exemption?

    For English language courses:
    Newly admitted students have until the end of their first semester after admission to the University to apply for exemption from taking LC English language courses. Further details are available HERE

    Applications for exemption must be submitted online using the designated form, which can be accessed HERE. Please note that applications submitted after the first semester will not be considered.

    For world language courses (i.e. Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish language courses):
    To apply for course exemption from world language courses offered by our Centre, please complete the online form HERE.

    Students are also advised to check with their home academic unit regarding the corresponding departmental policies and requirements. It is the students' responsibility to ensure that they have completed all necessary steps and provided all required information for course exemption.

  7. Can I apply for credit transfer?

    For English language courses:
    No credit transfer applications for LC English language courses will be considered.

    For world language courses (i.e. Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish language courses):
    To apply for credit transfer for world language courses offered by our Centre, please complete the online form HERE.

    Students are also advised to check with their home academic unit regarding the corresponding departmental policies and requirements. It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that they have completed all necessary steps and provided all required information for credit transfer.
