A topping-out ceremony on 23 February marked a major construction milestone for the CityU International Centre (CIC) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

This unique building aligns with CityU's vision to develop as an internationalised campus where students from around the world can mingle, learn and study in a comfortable, cosmopolitan environment.

CityU’s Council Chairman Mr Lester Garson Huang and President Way Kuo officiated at the ceremony together with the senior management while international students staged a festive parade to commemorate this special occasion.

Mr Huang said he was delighted that the CityU International Centre project was nearing completion, adding the CIC would significantly add to the multicultural ambience at CityU, making its learning environment truly international.

Located at the junction of Cornwall Street and Tat Hong Avenue, the CIC is part of a strategic drive to enhance CityU’s international reputation as a world-class university.

“Internationalisation is important in enriching the student learning experience, turning students into global citizens, and enhancing their competitiveness,” President Kuo said.

Enjoying an excellent reputation internationally, CityU is among the top 100 universities in the world according to the 2023 World University Rankings released by Times Higher Education. It is also ranked #54 in the world and #4 in the “Top 50 under 50”, according to Quacquarelli Symonds.

In addition, CityU ranks among the top three universities in Asia in terms of the proportion of the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists and is widely recognised as one of the world’s most rapidly rising universities.

There will be landscape and outdoor green areas plus an amphitheatre at the CIC for bringing people together for lectures, events and socialising. The facilities include office areas, meeting rooms, a multi-function area, communal areas and other ancillary facilities.

The building design will promote sustainability such as high-efficiency LED luminaries, using timers, day-lighting sensors and motion sensors for lighting control.
