Delegation from the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province visits CityUHK

A delegation from the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province visited City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) on 29 January. Discussions between the two sides focused on strengthening exchanges and cooperation in scientific and technological innovation.

The delegation, led by Ms Wang Yueqin, Director General of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, was warmly received by CityUHK senior management, including Professor Freddy Boey, President, Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise), Professor Cheng Shuk Han, Associate Vice-President (Research), and Professor Julie Li Juan, Associate Vice-President (Mainland Strategy). Mr Lester Garson Huang, Council Chairman, also met with members of the delegation on the same day.

Members of the delegation from the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province included Ms Yang Huifang, Director of the Exchange and Cooperation Division, Mr Huang Jiangkang, Director of the Laboratory and Infrastructure Division, and Ms Zhou Yu, Deputy Director of the Exchange and Cooperation Division.

President Boey thanked the delegation for their visit, and Professor Li introduced CityUHK’s internationalisation features and achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship. CityUHK was ranked as the world's most international university in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024, and the CityUHK Academy of Innovation, HK Tech 300 programme, and CityUHK (Dongguan) project have further consolidated the University’s leading position in innovative education and talent cultivation.

Ms Wang pointed out that Hong Kong’s universities are of a very high standard, and that CityUHK is particularly outstanding in innovation and entrepreneurship. She said the cooperation between the two sides will help leverage the scientific research advantages of Hong Kong universities. The two parties discussed ideas and suggestions for future scientific and technological cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong, including promoting scientific research, transforming scientific research findings into applications, cultivating talent, and building laboratories and R&D platforms.

After the meeting, the delegation visited the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves and the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution to learn about CityUHK’s research capabilities in communications technology and the marine environment.
