CityU joins hands with UC Berkeley to provide professional business training

The Haas School of Business of the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) will provide advanced management executive programmes to students of the Faculty of Business of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) under an agreement signed today (20 February). The partnership underscores CityU’s status as a top global institution.

Under this agreement, the two schools will work closely on the exchange of students, academics, research personnel and administrative heads. In one such exchange, 60 business executives studying at CityU will travel to Berkeley in the US for five days of executive leadership training in marketing, finance and entrepreneurship. In addition, starting from the next academic year, a professor from the Haas School of Business will teach at CityU for a semester.

The Faculty will also collaborate with the Haas School of Business in academic research and explore further areas of potential cooperation in teaching.

The two schools share the same vision on leadership training. Through the partnership, they will nurture a new generation of Asia business leaders whose expertise will lead Asia’s rising markets.

Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President of CityU, said in the agreement signing ceremony that by combining Hong Kong’s strength in doing business and California’s s strength in technological and entrepreneurial innovation, the partnership will be able to propose creative ideas to excel in the global market.

“The partnership amplifies the Faculty’s network with the international business community and strengthens our collaborative relationships with internationally renowned tertiary institutions, such as the Haas School of Business,” said Professor Wei Kwok-kee, Dean of the Faculty of Business, CityU.

“Local business expertise and students of CityU will benefit substantially from the professional training provided at both schools and from the global perspectives afforded into world markets,” Professor Wei added.

CityU is the first tertiary institution in Hong Kong to work with the newly established Asia Business Centre of the Haas School of Business. The centre aimed at bolstering executive leadership training and research collaboration throughout the Pacific Rim.

“We are delighted to find such high demand for collaboration with Berkeley’s business faculty here in Hong Kong,” said Dean Tom Campbell of the Haas School of Business.

“We are honoured that our esteemed colleagues at CityU hold the Haas School and Berkeley names in such high regard, and we reciprocate that respect. We look forward to joining forces with them in offering outstanding executive leadership training to the business leaders of Hong Kong,” added Dean Campbell.

Professor Campbell said in the ceremony that they chose to work with CityU in Hong Kong because they would like to work with the best business schools in Asia. The partnership is a good match because CityU shares the same strengths with UC Berkeley on innovations and technology.

The Faculty of Business of CityU has strong partnerships with renowned institutions in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. The associated projects enhance the Faculty’s goal of developing global vision in its research and teaching.

The Faculty also achieved prestigious international recognition - EQUIS accreditation - in February 2007, after receiving AACSB International accreditation in January 2005. The Faculty is one of only two premier business schools in the Greater China area accredited by both EQUIS and AACSB International.

In view of the rising importance of the Asia market, the Haas School of Business established the Asia Business Centre to expand its outreach to Asian alumni, business leaders and academic communities. Apart from CityU, the Centre is also working closely with leading institutions in Singapore and Taiwan in providing professional business training.
