University Intellectual Property Policy and Related Matters
The University is obliged to observe and comply with the principles and requirements of the provisions as set out in the Copyright Ordinance and, as such, has established relevant policies, procedures and practices. These include policies for the protection of intellectual rights for the work of individual members of the University, procedures to ensure the legal use of software on University-owned computers, and the promulgation of guidelines for photocopying of printed works by the University as a not-for-profit education establishment.
To help promote awareness and compliance within the University, the following policies and guidelines are presented here for easy reference by all staff and students.
This details the University's policy on intellectual property which relates to three aspects of intellectual property, namely, (i) Copyright, (ii) Patents, Registered Designs, Circuit Layout and Plant Variety Rights, and (iii) Trade & Service Marks.
Procedures are established to observe the "Reference Guide on Software Asset Management" concerning software acquisition and the maintenance of a central software asset inventory. In addition, there is a requirement on annual declaration of the legitimacy of software being used.

These Guidelines enable teaching staff of educational establishments, including universities and schools, to decide to what extent and under what circumstances they can make multiple copies of printed materials, and distribute the copies to their students during class. They were developed with reference to the Copyright Ordinance by a working group convened by the Director of Intellectual Property and under the auspices of the Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau, the Education and Manpower Bureau and the Intellectual Property Department.
