Castiglione in Context
An additional exhibition titled “Castiglione in Context” will accompany the Giuseppe Castiglione – Lang Shining New Media Art Exhibition co-organised by CityU and the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The additional event, which will be held at the same venue on 18/F, Academic 3, focuses on the intellectual and cultural context within which Castiglione produced his highly influential artwork, and relates the significant role played by Jesuit missionaries in the late Ming and Qing dynasties. A number of valuable porcelains, prints, paintings and publications from the 17th through to the 20th centuries loaned by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The University of Hong Kong are on display. The exhibition is open until 31 July 2016.
New appointments
Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development & External Relations) and Chair Professor of Information Systems and Electronic Commerce, has been appointed as Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC) for a term of two years with effect from 1 April 2016.
Dr Raymond Chan Kwok-hong has been appointed as Director of Communications and Public Relations with effect from 1 July 2016. This appointment is in addition to his substantive appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Social Sciences. Dr Chan’s concurrent appointment as Dean of Students will cease on 30 June 2016.
Hong Kong Real Property Federation’s visit
A 30-strong delegation led by Honorary Advisor Mr Chan Ka-kui and Chairman Mr Anthony Chan of the Hong Kong Real Estate Federation will visit CityU on 4 May. The schedule includes a tour of Gallery 360 and Future Cinema Studio, Department of Media and Communications, State Key Laboratory in Millimeter Waves, Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Lecture Theatre and a lunch at Eminence Galaxy Alumni Function Room.
Distinguished Lectures Series
Professor Chang Chun-yen, National Endowed Chair Professor and President Emeritus, National Chiao Tung University, will deliver a talk titled “New Horizon of FinFETs with Internal Gate and Negative Capacitance” on 3 May as part of the City University Distinguished Lectures Series. Professor Chang is a highly influential researcher in Taiwan’s electronics industry, education and material technology.
Professor Ovid J. L. Tzeng, Chancellor of the University System of Taiwan and Distinguished Research Fellow and Academician of Academia Sinica, offers a neurobiological account of human complexity in a lecture titled “Language, Diversity, and Complexity: A Neurobiological Approach to the Three Ss (Speech, Sign Language, and Script) of Human Communication”. His talk takes place on 5 May.

The exhibition “Giuseppe Castiglione – Lang Shining New Media Art Exhibition” in Taipei jointly organised by CityU and the National Palace Museum in Taipei last October has been awarded the Best of Show and Best New Media in WorldFest-Houston 2016. The 4K animation Adventure of the Mythical Creatures at the National Palace Museum and the 4K documentary Victory in Etching were awarded Silver Remi and Bronze Remi, respectively. These two videos will be screened at the current Giuseppe Castiglione exhibition on campus running through to the end of July.
Dr Kim Tae-joon, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), has received the 2016 IEEE Communications Society Stephen O. Rice Prize in the Field of Communications Theory for the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Communications. The award is only given to one paper each year published in the IEEE Transactions on Communications in the previous three calendar years. Dr Kim co-authored the paper with scholars from Purdue University and Nokia Networks. The title of the paper is “Millimeter Wave Beamforming for Wireless Backhaul and Access in Small Cell Networks”.
Students from different departments have been successful in the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Challenge 2016. Chan Siu-ting of the Department of Accountancy won the Best Team Award-Champion, and Most Favourite Team; Ho Hiu-fung of the Department of Information Systems, and Wong Shuk-ching of the Department of Accountancy, won the Best Team Award-First Runner-up; Lau Hoi-ngai and Wong Ka-ting, both of the Department of Accountancy, won the Best Team Award-Second Runner-up; Queenie Shum Kwan-yee of the School of Law won the Top Performing Cadet-Champion; and Valent Cheung Chiu-ying of the Department of Information Systems won the Top Performing Cadet-Second Runner-up. The CSR Challenge 2016 is one of the EYAcademy programme highlights and is organised by Ernst & Young Group Limited (EY). This year’s activity incorporated elements of both community engagement and entrepreneurship under the theme of “Better Living, Better World”.
Alumni and students from School of Creative Media performed strongly in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2016. Paperbox Creations Ltd, a start-up company formed by a group of Bachelor of Arts Creative Media alumni (Mr Lam Ho-tak, Mr Kwok Man-ho and Mr Ng Kai-chung), won the Best Digital Entertainment (Animation & Visual Effects) Special Mention (Directing & Story/Screenplay) with their video Shear Marks, while Tamar Wong Hei-ting won the Best Student Invention (Tertiary and Post-graduate) Bronze Award with the project “Wearable Canvas”. The Hong Kong ICT Awards, organised by Hong Kong information and communications technology (ICT) industry associations and professional bodies, aims at recognising and promoting outstanding ICT inventions and applications.
