CityU has risen two places and is now ranked 55th in the world and 7th in Asia, while we have maintained our position as the 4th best university in the world under 50 years of age in 2016, according to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). In fact, the QS Asia University Ranking has put CityU in 3rd place in Hong Kong. In addition, we have jumped at least 82 places from last year to become 119th in this year’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Presidentˇs Lecture Series
Science, art and understanding will be the focus of a talk by Professor Richard Allen, Chair Professor of Film and Media Art and Dean of the School of Creative Media, at the next installment of the Presidentˇs Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia. In the talk, Professor Allen will explore some of the consequences of failing to observe or even recognise the boundary between science and humanistic understanding. The Shape of the Earth: distinguished lecture
The mathematical question of the determination of the shape of a rotating body has been central in the development of mathematics for several centuries. Professor Étienne Ghys, Director of Research at the French National Center for Scientific Research and a member of the French Academy of Sciences, will discuss recent developments in this field in his talk “The Shape of the Planet Earth? An Unexpectedly Deep Mathematical Challenge!” on 5 October. The event is part of the France–Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series.

Professor Hong Yan, Dean of College of Science and Engineering and Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2016 Norbert Wiener Award for his contributions to image and biomolecular pattern recognition techniques. The award, which is regarded as the IEEE's highest award in the field of cybernetics, will be presented to Professor Yan at the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics in Budapest in October.
Wong Chun-kit, who is studying Electronic and Communication Engineering in the Department of Electronic Engineering, won the IET Prizes 2016 awarded by The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). IET’s vision is to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community, and to support technology innovation to meet the needs of society. The IET Prizes are awarded to excellent students who have achieved excellence at selected programmes that falls within the IET’s scope of interest. Chun-kit was nominated for his high academic achievements and numerous extra-curricular activities.
The paper “Modeling and Experimentation of Loosely-Coupled Coils with Transmitter Having Orthogonally-Placed Windings” co-authored by Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung of the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), Dr Leanne Chan Lai-hang, Assistant Professor in EE, Dr Tang Sai-chun, Assistant Professor in Harvard Medical School, and EE PhD graduate in 2000, Chow Po-wa, PhD student in EE, Cheng Chun-sing, MPhil student in EE, and Mr Abdulmecit Gungor, EE graduate in 2015, won the 2015 ECCE First Prize Oral Paper Award. This award was presented to the team by the High-Performance and Emerging Technologies Technical Committee of the IEEE Power Electronics Society at the 2016 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE) in Milwaukee, US in September.
CityU men's basketball team won the champion of the AXA Basketball League 2016 with a hard-fought 87-81 win over Lingnan University in September. Ho Yee-fu, who majors in Nuclear & Risk Engineering, scored 30 points and was awarded the most valuable player of the game.
