Honorary Fellows

This year’s Honorary Fellows are Mr David Chow Tak-fung, founder and Managing Director of Easy Power Limited; Mr Benjamin Kwok Chan-yiu, the co-founder and Managing Director of Kwonnie Electrical Products Limited; Dr Law Hing-chung, founding Principal of Pui Kiu College and former Principal of Pui Kiu Middle School; Mr James Liu Ying-yin, Managing Director of Mars Securities Company Limited and Action Win Industries Limited; and Mr Ben Wong Chung-mat, MH, JP, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Wong’s International Holdings Limited.



Appointments

Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration), has been appointed for another term of office from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2020.

Ms Maria Chin Pomon, currently Associate Director of Computing Services, has been appointed as Director of Computing Services with effect from 1 July 2017.



Roofs of Paris exhibition

A unique exhibition “The Roofs of Paris” devised by CityU’s School of Creative Media in conjunction with Le French May uses historical 3D architectural models, oil paintings, prints, photographs and new media installations to explore the Parisian cityscape, in particular the city’s rooftops. Considered part of global cultural importance, the rooftops have been submitted as candidates for registration to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Some well-known international museums, loaning to Hong Kong for the first time, are exhibiting some of their collections at the exhibition, making this a truly exceptional event. The exhibition runs through 23 July 2017 at CityU Exhibition Gallery.



Discovery and Innovation Gala 2017

More than 100 research projects from the College of Science and Engineering will be showcased from 21 to 22 June, including projects on detecting drink-driving and recovering wasted heat. Visitors can take advantage of guided tours at the research project exhibition and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workshops to appreciate the innovative staff and student work. Innovation in Social Work Practice

An open seminar titled “Innovation in Social Work Practice”, co-organised by the Department of Applied Social Sciences and the Columbia University School of Social Work, will be held on 7 June. Over 380 participants from the health sector, as well as social partners and community collaborators, will join the event, which covers two major themes: "Aging and Mental Health" and "Youth, ex-offenders, substance abuse, and violence".



Computer Science Challenge 2017

Teams from several local secondary schools had a chance to test their skills at the Computer Science Challenge 2017 organised by Department of Computer Science on 20 May. The students had to complete three tasks – Algebra Game Challenge, Save the Animals Programming Challenge, and Robot A-maze-ing Challenge. Y.W.C.A. CityU received the Silver Level Recognition by Exercise is Medicine® on Campus (EIM-OC), a programme calling upon universities to engage in the promotion of physical activity for better health. Launched in 2014, the event encourages faculty, staff and students to work together toward improving the well-being of the campus community.

Dr Hu Xianpeng, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics, received the HKMS Young Scholar Award from The Hong Kong Mathematical Society (HKMS) for his substantial contributions to the theoretical analysis of governing systems arising from continuum mechanics.

Dr Wong Hang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), received the Best Paper Award at Les Journées Nationales Microondes - JNM2017 (National Microwaves Conference 2017) in Saint-Malo, France. The winning paper, co-authored with his collaborators from XLIM, University of Limoges, was titled “The Optical Activation of Phase Change Materials and Demonstration of an Optically-controlled Agile Antenna at Millimeter Waves”.

Two PhD students from EE won the First-runner up and Second runner-up positions in the HKIE Electronics Project Competition 2017 titled “Intelligent Technology Innovations for Smart Cities”. The two winning projects, both supervised by Dr Tsang Kim-fung, Associate Professor in EE, were “An Electrocardiogram-based Abnormal Driver’s status Detection for Road Traffic Safety” developed by Wu Chung-kit, who won the first-runner up prize; and “Optimal Interference-Mitigated ZigBee Based High Traffic Advanced Metering Infrastructure”, developed by Chi Haoran, who won the second runner-up prize.

Rudra Gopinath, a BSc Computer Science student participating in the Joint Bachelor's Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University, has been selected to receive the Jonathan L. Gross Award for Academic Excellence. This award is granted every year to the most distinguished General Studies major in the Department of Computer Science (CS) at Columbia University.

Fan Hin-wai and Xin yan, EE students, and Li Chun-wai and Hung Lok-bun of the Department of Economics and Finance, won the Second Prize in the Social Enterprise category of the Challenge Cup, Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2017. Their project was titled “TicketChain”. Chow Tsz Wing of the Department of Marketing won Second Prize in the Entrepreneurship Proposal category with “Chow TV”. Li Hongfei and Wan Chingyin, a PhD student and undergraduate, respectively, from the Department of Physics and Materials Science, won the Third Prize in the Energy & Chemical Engineering Category with the project “An extremely safe and wearable solid state zinc ion battery”. Xu Yaohai and Wong Nok-ching of CS won Third Prize in the Information Technology Category with the project “FastLSH: A Similarity Search Engine on High-Dimensional Big Data”.

Valent Cheung Chiu-ying and Leon Lee Ho-wai, both Year 3 students in Global Business Systems Management; Michelle Kwok Yi-ling, a Year 4 student in Marketing, and Francis Sze Cheuk-fai, a Year 3 CS student, teamed up to win the Social Innovation CEO Competition with their proposal “ElderTreks”. The project aims to recruit retirees with good communication skills and familiarity with their local community to be local tour guides. The competition was jointly organised by the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund and Youth.gov.hk.
