Changes to academic units

The School of Veterinary Medicine has been retitled as the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (CVMLS). The Department of Biomedical Sciences and a new department titled Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health will be included under CVMLS.

Changes in the College of Science and Engineering include the retitling of the Department of Biology and Chemistry to the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Physics and Materials Science to the Department of Physics; and a new department titled Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).



CityU Scholars

CityU Scholars is set to promote the achievements of faculty members, facilitate reporting information to the government, enhance the efficiency of internal reporting, and eliminate duplication. A soft launch for the system has been underway since 18 April, and the system was officially launched on 30 June. The new system will streamline and simplify administrative procedures for performance appraisal and government reporting. For more information, please visit here.



Special lecture

In past several years, China has launched several innovative development plans such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). In this talk, Professor Feng Da-Hsuan, Director of Global Affairs and Special Advisor to Rector of University of Macau, will discuss the underlying challenges, namely “cultural communication,” facing China and what fundamental steps China has initiated with reference to these projects and the One Belt, One Road initiative. The talk is titled “Cultural Communications - Ancient to Modern Silk Road: Chinese Millennium Mindset Transformation” and takes place on 24 July. This is a theme-based lecture sponsored by the HKSAR Government.



Kudos

Two teams, namely City Dreamwork and Dream Development, formed by 32 undergraduate students from the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering (MBE) and the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) won prizes at the Robocon Hong Kong Contest 2017 jointly organised by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Hong Kong Computer Society and The Hong Kong Institute of Engineers on 18 June at Hong Kong Science Park. City Dreamwork won “The Best Engineering Design Prize” and “The Best Artistic Design Prize”, while Dream Development won “The Best Team Spirit Prize”. The two CityU teams were co-supervised by Dr Ricky Lau Wing-hong, Associate Professor in EE; Dr Louis Liu King-pui, Instructor in SEEM; Dr King Lai Wai-chiu, Associate Professor in MBE; and Dr Luk Bing-lam, Senior Engineer in MBE.

Jane Zhong Jing, Frank Tao Ye and Daniel Wang Wenxiong on the MSc Finance programme in the Department of Economics and Finance (EF), and Jojo Wei Jian, on the MSc in Business Information Systems in EF, won the following prizes at the SCB Future Leader Challenge: Grand Prize Winner; the 5-Hour Case Winner; 24-Hour Case Winner; and Winner's Institution. The coach was Dr Amy Yip Choi-yee, Visiting Assistant Professor in EF. Over 1,000 participants from graduate business schools took part in the competition.

A team of four undergraduate students – Joyce Lau Tsz-ching, BBA Accountancy, Ruby Sung Hei-lam and Kayley Wong Hang-ning, BBA Marketing, and Emerensia Widjaja, BBA Finance – won the HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition 2017, which was organised by the Asia Case Research Center at the University of Hong Kong. The team won the Hong Kong title and the Champion title in the final round held in June, competing against 23 other business school teams from 22 countries across the Asia Pacific region.

PhD student Hadrien Van Lierde was selected as the Best Presenter at the ACM-2017 International Conference on Data Mining, Communications and Information Technology (DMCIT 2017). The winning paper, supervised by Professor Tommy Chow Wai-shing of the Department of Electronic Engineering, is titled “A Hypergraph Model for Incorporating Social Interactions in Collaborative Filtering” and will be published in the ACM International Conference Proceeding Series.

The paper “Impact of Magnetic Field Generated by Wireless Power Transfer System of Electric Vehicle on Retinal”, co-authored by Dr Peter Leung Sai-wing, Associate Professor, Dr Timothy Siu Yun-ming, Associate Professor, Dr Diao Yinliang, Postdoctoral Fellow, Sun Weinong, PhD student, and He Yaqing, PhD student, all from EE; and Dr Richard Kong Yuen-chong, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry, received the Best Poster Paper Award at 2017 Asia-Pacific International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility.
