Year of the Dog Chinese New Year Staff Party

A buffet lunch, a lion dance, a children’s Cantonese opera performance, acrobats, a live band featuring senior staff members and the distribution of red packets will feature at the Year of the Dog Chinese New Year Staff Party on 22 February. The event is organised by the Staff Social Club. The buffet will be held from 11.30am to 1.30pm at the James Liu Multi-Purpose Room in the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Complex; and the events will take place from 12.30pm to 2.15pm at Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Hall in the Lau Ming Wai Academic Building.



IAS Distinguished Lecture Series

Materials informatics is growing rapidly by integrating machine learning with materials science and engineering, with tools drawn from fields such as data science, internet, computer science and others. Professor Zhang Tongyi of the Materials Genome Institute at Shanghai University will discuss this topic in a talk titled “Materials Genome Initiative and Materials Informatics” on 9 February as part of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) Distinguished Lecture Series.



President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia

Care for the elderly, particularly the frail, poses a challenge to Hong Kong’s public healthcare system. However, research suggests that investment in community-based care is more cost-effective for active ageing. This lecture, titled “Integrated Elderly Care: Challenges and Opportunities”, will discuss an integrated care approach that coordinates acute and community-based care. The speaker, Professor Frank Chen Youhua, is Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Management Sciences, and the talk is scheduled for 5 March.



CityU Press@Taipei International Book Exhibition 2018

City University of Hong Kong Press will take part in the Taipei International Book Exhibition 2018 from 6–11 February to promote scholarship and disseminate knowledge and creative works. Some of the publications that make their debut are Miscellany from a Shanghai Scholar (in Chinese), The Chinese Communist Party as Organizational Emperor: Culture, Reproduction, and Transformation (in Chinese) and Selected Works of Wang Fanxi (in Chinese), Towards Democracy: Do Malaysia’s Ethnic and Religious Tensions Dim Its Prospects? (in Chinese) and Perspectives on the South China Sea Disputes (in Chinese). Dr Louisa Wei Shiyu, Associate Professor of the School of Creative Media, will host a talk at the exhibition on female directors from Hong Kong and Taiwan on 8 February. The CityU Press booth will be located at Booth No. A1219, International Zone, Taipei World Trade Centre Exhibition Hall 1.



Walking with Omura’s Whale (WOW) Programme

The WOW programme will organise an exhibition titled “Whales, Dolphins, and Humans: Can We All Get Along?” in the Wofoo Foundation Gallery of the Run Run Shaw Library from 29 January to 11 February. This event is organised by one of three related programmes that fall under the Jockey Club Enhancing Youth Empathy Project through Immersive Visualisation. The goal of the project is to enable young people to develop understanding and concern for 1) ethnic minority groups, 2) the elderly and people with disabilities, and 3) nature and the environment. The Project is funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and led by City University of Hong Kong.
