The President's Lecture Series

The Laboratory for Public Management and Policy applies experimental research designs to questions of public management and policy. The talk titled “My Citizens Panel: New approaches to citizen satisfaction and public policy polling”, to be held on 19 April, will introduce the My Citizens Panel mobile app and demonstrate its potential using topics of citizen satisfaction and examples of topical questions in public policy.  The speaker is Professor Richard M Walker, Chair Professor of Public Management in the Department of Public Policy and Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. CityU Distinguished Lectures

Professor Eric A. Hanushek, Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, will consider both the economic impact of school quality and the types of policies that are likely to lead to improvements in quality in a talk titled “Meeting the Sustainable Development Goals: The Role of Education” on 18 April. Professor Huang Chin-shing, Distinguished Research Fellow and Vice President of Academia Sinica, will deliver a talk titled “Manifesto of an Institute: Contextualizing ‘The Aims of Founding the Institute of History and Philology’ by Fu Ssu-nien in 1928”on 25 April. In his talk, Professor Huang will analyse this essay written by Fu Ssu-nien, an outstanding historian and philologist, and clarify the entanglements among Fu, Rankean historiography and traditional knowledge (especially textual criticism). France–Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture

Professor Jean-Pierre Sauvage of the University of Strasbourg and a Member of the French Academy of Sciences will give a lecture titledMolecular Machines in Biology and in Chemistry” on 11 April. The speaker will provide a historical perspective of the field known as “chemical topology”. The link between catenanes or rotaxanes and molecular machines will be stressed. CityU has won the “Gold Award” in the category of “Other Building Types” under the “Commendation Scheme on Source Separation of Commercial and Industrial Waste 2016/2017”. The Gold Award is the highest award for the category. The Environmental Protection Department holds the scheme every year to encourage commercial and industrial premises to monitor the effectiveness of existing mechanisms and to keep improving waste separation and recovery arrangements. Holly Lam Wing-yan, a Year 4 student in the Department of English, won a Silver award in Division A1, while Helle Cheng Hiu-ying, a Year 4 student in the Department of Linguistics and Translation, won a Bronze award in Division A2 of the recent speech contest “German Language Olympics”. The competition was organised by the Goethe-Institut Hongkong, the Consulate Generals of Austria, Germany and Switzerland in Hong Kong, as well as the German language departments of five universities in Hong Kong.

An interdisciplinary student team from the Department of Computer Science, Department of Physics and Department of Electronic Engineering won the 2nd runner-up position in the Bank of China HK FinTech Hackathon. The students are members of the CityU Apps Lab. The winning project is called “I"PocketIn - AI Smart Investment”. The team is entitled to a fast-track interview opportunity for the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF) or Cyberport Incubation Programme.

Jeremy Leung Ka-ming, BBA Information Management, Rica Ng Chak-lam, BEng Information Engineering, and Thomas Tse Ho-yin, BBA Marketing, teamed up with students from two other local universities to win the 1st runner-up position in the JOS Innovation Awards 2017-2018. Their winning project was called “Algotritionist”. The theme of the competition was “Happy Ageing – Innovative Healthcare Solution”. The students’ work was required to meet the practical needs of the elderly and the products had to be marketable.

Chong Wai-man and Wu Wing-hong from the Department of Computer Science won the Third Prize in the Digital China and HKUST-BDI Cup “Smart City in Hong Kong” Competition 2017 for their project titled “Project-City.” Their work aims to develop a new system that can facilitate fire and rescue services.
