The President’s Lecture Series

Sparsity is a way to exploit the low-dimensional structure of solutions to obtain feasible solutions for high-dimensional problems. In this talk, part of the President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia, Professor Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Vice-President (Student Affairs) and Chair Professor in the Department of Mathematics, introduces regularisation methods that enforce sparsity in solutions and their application to several image reconstruction problems. The talk, titled “Sparsity – the beauty of less is more”, will be held on 16 April.

Distinguished Lectures at Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study

Methods for processing charge-transfer complexes, which typically have properties that are substantially different to those of their constituting molecules, into nanoparticles and their energy, environmental and biomedical applications will be discussed by Professor Lee Chun-sing, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Chair Professor of Materials Chemistry, at his online talk “Charge-Transfer Complexes and their Applications” on 8 April. This event is part of the Distinguished Lecture Series on Chemistry held by the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS).

This lecture follows the online talk by Professor Zhang Hua,Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials in the Department of Chemistry, on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials (PEN) delivered on 31 March as part of the same HKIAS series on chemistry.

In addition, two online talks in the HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series on Physics will be held this month. The first will be given on 14 April by Professor Wang Xunli, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Physics. The talk is titled “Structure and Dynamics of Metallic Glass – Atomistic Insights from Neutron and Synchrotron Scattering Experiments”. The second, titled “Tuning of Confined Quantum States”, will be delivered by Professor Zhang Ruiqin, Chair Professor in the Department of Physics and Chair Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, on 28 April.

Exercise Is Medicine

Once again CityU has been rewarded for encouraging its community to work together towards improving well-being through a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise. We have been awarded the Exercise Is Medicine (EIM) Gold Campus Award for 2021 as well as a Covid-19 Conqueror badge by EIM, a US-based recognition launched by the American College of Sports Medicine.

Kudos

In recognition of his innovative approaches to teaching, Dr Wang Cheng, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has received the College of Engineering’s Outstanding Teaching Award for 2020/21. Before joining CityU in 2018, Dr Wang was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard where he studied for his PhD. His research fields include enhancing light-matter interaction in nanophotonic structures.
