New College of Biomedicine

Guided by a vision to become a global leader in interdisciplinary education, research and innovation for biomedicine and health, our new College of Biomedicine, established on 1 January 2025, initially comprises three constituent units: the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Neuroscience.

In addition, Professor Isaiah Arkin, Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been appointed Chair Professor of Structural Biochemistry and concurrently Dean of the College of Biomedicine, with effect from 17 March.



New appointments

Congratulations are due to the following three academics for their new appointments as heads of department: Professor Alex Wang Chong from the Department of Information Systems, effective from 1 January 2025; Professor Wang Cong from the Department of Computer Science, effective from 1 January 2025; and Professor Yang Yong from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, effective from 2 January 2025.



International symposium on functional materials

Organised by the Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy at CityUHK, the HK-Seoul International Symposium on Functional Materials will be held on 10 January, focusing on the core discussion areas of functional materials for clean energy development. The symposium aims to bring together experts, researchers, and industry professionals to exchange ideas, present cutting-edge research, and foster collaborations in advancing sustainable energy technologies. International conference on a carbon-neutral future

The role of nuclear energy in global decarbonisation from the perspectives of the global community, mainland China and Hong Kong is the primary topic for the International Conference on Powering a Carbon Neutral Future - The Role of Nuclear Energy, which will be held on 17 January. In collaboration with CLP Power Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Branch of the National Precious Metals Material Engineering Research Center at CityUHK, the event will bring together government officials, policymakers, academics, industry professionals and practitioners to explore the role of nuclear energy in achieving a carbon-neutral future, both locally and internationally. Tackling plastics waste: HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series

The current increase in plastics production/consumption has generated vast amounts of waste, which has a severe environmental impact. This lecture by Professor Tobin Marks, HKIAS Senior Fellow and a renowned scholar at Northwestern University, US, outlines more effective strategies for deconstructing/recycling plastics such as polyesters, nylons and polyolefins. The talk is titled ¨Toward a Circular Plastics Economy. Mechanism-Based Catalyst Design and Evolution for Waste Polymer Recycling〃 and will take place on 13 January as part of the HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series, which is hosted by the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS). Exhibition

Around 200 exquisite artefacts spanning different cultures, religions and history are on display until 23 February at the ongoing exhibition, ¨Might and Magnificence: Ceremonial Arms and Armour across Cultures,〃 as part of the celebrations for our 30th anniversary. This fascinating exhibition reveals how ceremonial arms and armour from North Africa to Southeast Asia were items of prestige that played multifaceted roles, extending far beyond their practical use in war. Kudos

Liu Yi, a PhD student from the Department of Computer Science (CS), has been awarded the ByteDance Scholarship among 400 candidates for his project proposal titled ¨Towards Efficient, Secure, and Robust Federated Multimodal Large Language Models: System Design and Emerging Applications〃. In addition, his supervisor, Professor Wang Cong in CS, has won the Best Mentor Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to nurturing talent. The awards ceremony will take place in Singapore from 7 to 8 January.

Onggowarsito Raymonk Surya, a Year 3 student from the Department of Electrical Engineering, has won the IET Prize 2024, which was presented by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in Hong Kong. The prize recognises students who have achieved outstanding academic excellence and who have been active in extra-curricular activities, engineering institutions, and community services.

CityUHK has won the Certificate of Merit in the Public and Community Services category at the 2023 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE) for its commitment to sustainability and improving environmental performance. For more information, please visit here.
