| Naming ceremony
Lecture Theatre 10 was named after Mr Peter Ho Ka-nam,
Managing Director of Techworld Industries Limited and an alumnus of CityU,
at a ceremony on 28 November in appreciation of his contribution to the
University. Mr Ho is a recent graduate of CityU's MSc Engineering Management
and is currently studying for an Engineering Doctorate (Engineering Management).
Mr Ho has collaborated with CityU to develop in-house training programmes
and weekly lecture series for his staff in Hong Kong and Dongguan. Mr
Ho has made several generous donations to the University in support of
the Industrial Attachment Scheme, student scholarships and the development
of the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies.

| Giving thanks
A Thanksgiving Dinner was held on 20 November for donors and supporters
in appreciation of their contributions to the University. More than 100
guests, including donors, friends of the University, Council members,
staff and alumni, attended the annual event organised by the Community
Relations Committee of the University Council.

| Appointment
Ms Cecilia Kwok Sau-fong has taken up the post of Director
(Career and Internship Office) to lead the newly established Career and
Internship Office and provide career and internship services to students
and other related parties.

| Language
matters
The Halliday Centre for Intelligent Applications of Language Studies (HCLS)
of CityU is holding an international conference on "Becoming a World Language:
the Growth of Chinese, English and Spanish" from 5 to 7 December. The
conference explores the significance of a language transforming into a
global language. Linguistics experts from all over the world will assemble
to address some of the little-known effects of this phenomenon on the
world's speakers, speech communities and language systems. It will assess
the growth of Chinese and Spanish as world languages and the globalisation
that has led to the expansion of English. Professor M.A.K. Halliday,
Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney and adviser
to HCLS of CityU, will give a plenary address on the topic "Some Social-semiotic
Reflections on Language Growth". Speaking at the opening ceremony will
be CityU's Professor (Chair) David Tong Shuk-yin, Deputy
President, Professor (Chair) Martin Painter, Acting Dean
of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Professor Jonathan
Webster, Head of Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.

| Anniversary
conference
CityU will host from 7 to 11 December the Fourth Pacific Rim Conference
on Mathematics. The conference takes on special significance this year,
as it forms part of the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of CityU's
Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences. A high profile mathematics
event, the conference objectives are to present the latest trends in mathematical
research to a wider audience and develop stronger ties between mathematicians
in the Pacific Rim region. It will comprise eight focus sessions, with
each including a plenary speaker and several invited speakers. Professor
(Chair) Roderick Wong Sue-cheun, Vice President (Research) and
Director of the Centre, and Professor (Chair) Philippe G Ciarlet
of the Department of Mathematics will be co-chairing the conference.

| Conference
on challenges in Asia
The Department of Asian and International Studies and Southeast Asia Research
Centre will co-host the Hong Kong Sociological Association 9th Annual
Conference on 8 December. Under the theme of "Sociology and Reflexivity:
Challenges in Asia", the conference will invite scholars and researchers
from around the world to discuss critical issues facing Asia. There will
be 14 panel discussions addressing issues ranging from Chinese migration,
gender systems, women's empowerment in Muslim contexts, etc. CityU academics
will chair and present speeches during some of the panels.

| Creativity
rewarded
The creative marketing proposals and TV commercials designed by students
at CityU have earned them six awards in the tertiary education group of
the first Young Marketing Communicators Award. Organised by the Hong Kong
Institute of Marketing, the Young Marketing Communicators Award is an
integrated marketing communications plan competition open for all young
people aged 17 to 25 in Hong Kong. The teachers who gave advice to the
award-winning students were Mr Alex Tham Koy-siong and
Dr Vincent Fok Shun-cheong, teaching fellows; Mr
Regan Lam, an instructor; and Ms Daisy Lee Suet-mui,
a lecturer in the Department of Marketing.

| Kudos
The independent film b420, directed, scripted and edited by Mr
Matthew Tang Hon-keung, a 2004 master degree graduate of the
School of Creative Media, has won the Best Film Award at the 4th Vienna
Youth International Film Festival. The Vienna Youth International Film
Festival, organised once every two years, aims to encourage more films
based on the theme of youth. Entries were submitted from 12 countries
and regions this year.
Dr Xue Quan, Associate Professor of the
Department of Electronic Engineering, and his PhD student, Chen
Jianxin, received the best paper award at the Microwave and Millimetre-wave
Symposium of China, held in Ningbo. In the best paper Out-of-phase
power divider based on double-sided parallel strip line, they presented
their novel solution in the development of an out-of-phase power divider.
Power dividers are widely used in various communication systems, for example
in mobile phone signal transmission base stations.
