New council members appointed
Three leading members of the business and professional communities have been appointed by the Chief Executive to the Council of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) for a term of three years, with effect from 1 January 2008. The three new external Council members are: Mr Joseph Lee Chung-tak, Group Chairman, Wofoo Plastics & Chemicals Group; Mr Armstrong Lee Hon-cheung, Director, Worldwide Consulting Group Co. Ltd.; and Mr Yeung Ka-sing, Chairman of the Hong Kong Housing Society.


Language immersion
To enhance students' global perspective and strengthen their mastery of the English language, CityU is introducing a Cultural and Language Immersion Scheme to develop students' intercultural awareness and English language skills through academic and social service engagement in an overseas English-speaking environment. Staff and students from the English Language Centre who were involved in the pilot-phase during the Christmas Break will share their experience at the February 18 information session at Mult-media Conference Room, 3.30pm  5.30pm.


Library forum
Dr Jerry Yu Jer-tsang and Professor Steve Ching Hsiang-hoo, Chief Information Officer and University Librarian respectively, will host a library forum at 3pm on 19 February at the Reading/Seminar Room at the Library to update users on the progress of the library renovation project and the users' general feedback. The architect of the project will also outline the approach of the next renovation stage to be carried out during the next summer break.

 

City Cultural Salon
Some 40 people, including those from local higher institutions, and arts and culture fans, attended the City Cultural Salon, "The cultural meaning of Cantonese Opera", organised by the Cultural and Sports Committee on 30 January. Mr Yuen Siu-fai, a celebrated Cantonese opera actor, shared with the audience his experiences and thoughts on Cantonese opera.


Moviemaker bags Asian film award
The Backpacker, a movie produced by Ryan Chan Hon-yan, a recent graduate from the School of Creative Media, won an Outstanding Award at "The 4th FUTURE VISION-Asian International Youth Film Festival", which was held in Beijing in October 2007. The theme of the festival was "Human  Nature", and there were more than 600 entries from across Asia, including Hong Kong, mainland China, Korea and Japan, from which 12 works were awarded the Outstanding Award. Ryan was the only winner from Hong Kong.

 

Students power to award
CityU students received six honours at the Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology (HKICT) Awards; Gold and Bronze Awards for Best Innovation and Research (College and Undergraduates), and three Certificates of Merit. River Li Tin-ho and Andrew Leung Siu-wai of the Department of Electronic Engineering won the Gold Award and the Certificate of Merit (Best Social Responsibility) for an energy-efficient burn-in system for power supplies.


FSE Alumni Achievement Award
Nominations for the first FSE Alumni Achievement Award will be closed on 1 March 2008. CityU students, staff and alumni are encouraged to recommend outstanding graduates of Science and Engineering programmes (part-time or full-time) to contest the award. In establishing the award, the Faculty publicly recognises the achievements of its alumni and strengthens the relationship between them. Essay competition
SThe Chinese Civilisation Centre is organising an essay competition on Chinese cultural retrospection to encourage CityU students to re-examine the relationship between Chinese culture and modern life and to be more aware of the continuity of Chinese culture. Students may join the competition by submitting an essay under the main theme of "Chinese cultural retrospection by CityU students" by 5 May 2008. The competition is open for all full-time bachelor and associate degrees students. Details can be found at www.jvrhmfr.xyz/cciv.

 

New Year staff party
The Year of the Rat Chinese New Year Party for all University staff will be held on Friday, 15 February. A buffet lunch will be held from 11.30am  12.45pm in the Multi-purpose Rooms. The celebration programme will then be staged from 12.45pm  2.30pm in the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall. Chinese handicraft stalls will also be set up along the covered walkway near University Circle.
