Earthquake project
A fundraising dinner held by the Department of Applied Social Studies' Project Rebuild for the Sichuan Earthquake: Rebuilding Lives and Schools raised an estimated $200,000 on 27 June at the CityU Shing Hin Chinese Restaurant. The project has so far raised an estimated $300,000, which will be handed to charity organisation Sowers Action. The money will go towards building a pre-fabricated school in the earthquake-ravaged province.


New appointments
Dr Angel Lin Mei-yi, Associate Professor, has been appointed as Acting Head of Department of English and Dr Joe He, Associate Professor, as Acting Head of the new Department of Media and Communication with effect from 1 July until further notice.


Staff Association election
The CityU Staff Association election to choose 12 candidates for the Executive Committee positions was held through a secret ballot on 26 June. Results the of election were announced at the Annual General Meeting, with 91 votes cast and 12 candidates elected. The posts of Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Vice-chairperson B and Treasurer were retained by the incumbents. They are Dr John Tse Wing-ling, Department of Applied Social Studies; Dr Robin Bradbeer, Department of Electronic Engineering; Ms Freda Yu Chau-ngor, Library, and Dr Yeung Lam-fat, Department of Electronic Engineering, respectively. The post of Vice-chairperson A was won by Dr Eddie Yu Fu-keung, Department of Management, and Vice-chairperson C by Mr Shea Koon-wah, Division of Commerce.


CCIV 10th anniversary
A two-day conference marking the 10th anniversary of the Chinese Civilisation Centre (CCIV) is to be held from 2 July. The opening ceremony of the conference, titled "Passing the Flame: Teaching and Learning of Chinese Civilisation", was officiated by Wang Shiyu, National Class One Performer, Professor H K Chang, Emeritus Professor of CityU, and Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Acting Vice-President (Undergraduate Education) of CityU. Professor Jonathan Spence, the keynote speaker, delivered a lecture. A launching ceremony of "The Kunqu Educational Project", which is a key celebration activity, was also held on the same day.

 

East Asian Cinema
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL) will organise an international symposium on Cross-Cultural Perspectives on East Asian Cinemas from 3 July to 4 July. Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Acting Vice-President (Undergraduate Education) and Professor Jonathan Webster, Head, CTL, will deliver welcoming speeches, while Professor (Chair) Zhang Longxi of CTL will give an opening address. Guest speakers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, USA, the Netherlands, Korea and elsewhere will discuss their experiences.

 

Cultural salon
The Cultural and Sports Committee held the last City Cultural Salon of this academic year on 24 June. Guest speaker Professor H K Chang, former President of CityU, delivered a speech on the topic, "Nylonkong: A Tale of Three Cities". Professor Chang discussed the challenges facing Hong Kong in relation to a recent feature story in an international news magazine that coined the term Nylonkong, to mean New York-London-Hong Kong. Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, University Pro-Chancellor; Mr Chung Shui-ming, Council Chairman; Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, and Ms Elizabeth Wang Ming-chun, Honorary Doctor of Letters, also took part in the function.


European radio research
CityU is participating in a European Commission information and communication technology research project with 13 universities, research institutions and technology companies from across Europe, and Canada, in the Seventh Framework Programme for Research of the European Commission. The project has been granted funding of around a4 million (HK$48 million) and will combine wireless communications and navigation for the benefit of future (fourth generation) mobile radio systems. The research team at CityU is led by Professor (Chair) Li Ping of the Department of Electronic Engineering.


Essay competition
The Chinese Civilisation Centre organised a prize presentation ceremony for the essay competition on Chinese cultural retrospection on 26 June that attracted more than 100 entries. Nine essays were selected from 15 finalists. School of Law student, Song Weiguang, was the named competition champion; Xu Shen, Department of Marketing, was runner-up and Chen Mengli, Department of Mathematics, took third place.

 

Multimedia exhibition
Around 60 graduates of the School of Creative Media (SCM) displayed 56 photography and multimedia works in the exhibition titled "Medialogue 2008: Upsilon" that ran from 24 June to 29 June. The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Tobias Berger, Executive Director and Curator of Para/Site Art Space, Professor James Moy, Dean of SCM, and Tina Lo Tin-fung, graduate student and President of "Medialogue 2008: Upsilon".


External appointments
Dr Robin Bradbeer, Associate Professor, Department of Electronic Engineering, has been appointed as Adjunct Professor at University of Southern Queensland, Australia, for three years until March 2011.
