Beijing trip
Professor Way Kuo, President of University, made a trip to Beijing from 21 to 24 December, during which he visited the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Supreme People's Court, and Tsinghua University. Professor Kuo met the leaders of these departments and the university and discussed projects of cooperation among other topics. It is expected that CityU will soon be implementing new measures to promote cooperation with institutions in mainland China.


New appointments
Three heads of department in the College of Business have been appointed. Professor Andrew Lim has been appointed as Professor and concurrently as Head of Department of Management Sciences from 2 January 2009 to 31 July 2011. Professor J Leon Zhao has been appointed as Chair Professor of Information Systems and concurrently as Head of Department of Information Systems from 19 January 2009 to 31 July 2012. Dr Su Chenting has been appointed as Head of Department of Marketing from 1 April 2009 to 31 July 2012.

In addition, Professor David Harry Rosenbloom has been appointed as Chair Professor of Public Management in the Department of Public and Social Administration. He assumed duty on 2 January. Professor Moshe Zukerman has been appointed as Chair Professor of Information Engineering in the Department of Electronic Engineering, and assumed duty on 17 December 2008.


Graduate Studies Information Day
The Graduate Studies Information Day 2009 will be held on 10 January, featuring a host of taught postgraduate, professional doctorate and research degree programmes. On the theme ¨Knowledge Hub for Professionals〃, the day's exhibition will give prospective students ample information about the various postgraduate programmes on offer at CityU and the related learning facilities, complete with talks by the colleges/schools.


Literary Awards
CityU will be hosting the City Literary Awards, a writing competition now welcoming entries. In addition to prose, short story and poetry, a new category, namely Art and Cultural Criticism, has been added to encourage young writers to express their opinions of and insights into local art and culture. Marine research symposium
The Centre for Marine Environmental Research and Innovative Technology (MERIT), led by CityU, held the Area of Excellence (AoE) symposium on 5-6 January to report on the achievements and progress of the Centre in the development of novel technologies for monitoring the health of marine environment, pollution control, bioremediation and risk assessment. Meetings with international scholars, United Nations personnel, government officials and green group representatives will also be held during the two-day programme. MERIT is one of the eight AoEs selected by the University Grants Committee, and this is the fifth AoE symposium organised by the Centre.


TTO Forum
A Technology Transfer Forum featuring data security and encryption will be held on 15 January. The forum aims to disseminate mature technologies developed at CityU to the local industrial community for the advancement of knowledge and technology in Hong Kong. Dr Cheng Lee-ming and Dr Wong Kwok-wo, both Associate Professors of Department of Electronic Engineering and Dr Duncan Wong Shek, Assistant Professor of Department of Computer Science will discuss, respectively, the latest technologies of digital watermarking chip, integrating data compression with encryption and security on mobile messaging and email without personal certificate.


World civilisations
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics is scheduled to hold the International Symposium on Teaching and Learning of World Civilisation from 10 to 11 January. The symposium aims to explore ways of teaching world civilisations in general education curriculums for the 21st century in the context of Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and Asia as a whole.


Burma workshop
The Southeast Asia Research Centre is holding a workshop on ¨National Conciliation and Consolidation Process in Burma/Myanmar〃 from 8 to 9 January. The workshop will thoroughly examine the political impasse in that country and, among other things, address approaches that might offer ways in which the military junta and the political opposition might be able to work together. All papers that will be presented at the workshop, which brings together many international experts, will be published in an edited volume.


Business for breakfast
In the face of the so-called economic tsunami, CityU hosted a breakfast seminar on 19 December 2008 on Fostering Creativity and Innovation in Global Business. Instead of resorting to layoffs and downsizing, seminar speakers Dr Paul Hempel, Associate Professor, Department of Management, CityU, Dr Michael Morris, Chavkin-Chang Professor of Leadership, Columbia University, and Mr Thomas J Mehrmann, Chief Executive, Ocean Park Corporation and others advocated the pursuit of creativity and innovation to help organisations survive and even thrive in the turbulent global business environment. The seminar engaged global-minded executives and professionals in an insightful dialogue to promote novel ideas and practices for advancing global business management. A Frontier Conference on the same topic was also held, with Chair Professor Leung Kwok and Dr Morris as conveners.
