Academic conference
The Department of Information Systems is organising the 16th Cross Straits Information Management Conference (CSIM 2010) from 5 to 6 August at CityU. CSIM 2010 is a platform for academics, practitioners, policymakers and future academic and business leaders in Greater China to exchange views on how information technology could energise the region. The conference title is "Information Services Management in Ubiquitous Commerce."

 

Mooting competition
CityU's School of Law is organising the Inaugural International Alternative Dispute Resolution Mooting Competition from 8 to 15 August. The competition, in association with China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission and School of Law, Columbia University, is the first of its kind in the world, combining arbitration and mediation techniques for resolving disputes in simulated legal cases. Teams from Australia, China, India, South Korea and the US, including participants from Harvard Law School and School of Law, Tsinghua University, will compete in the week-long event. Five law students from School of Law, CityU are currently undergoing rigorous training for the event.

 

Summer language programme
A summer programme entitled "Linguistics Wonderland: Exploring Human Language" organised by the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics attracted 35 Secondary 4 and Secondary 6 students from 27 secondary schools. The aim of the programme, which took place from 27 to 29 July, was to stimulate interest in learning languages and expose course participants to diverse features of human language and culture as well as to apply the work of social scientists and linguists to daily life.

 

Kudos
Wang Dian, a Year 3 BEngECE student supervised by Professor Chan Chi-hou, Acting Provost and  Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering, was the 1st runner-up at the Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong Younger Members Exhibition/Conference (YMEC 2010)—Undergraduate Section for his paper "Power Amplifier Linearization by Source Harmonic Termination Optimization." YMEC is an exhibition and conference where students and young professionals (aged 35 or below) in the engineering and technology industry present their projects on a competitive basis.

Chen Nan and Wang Jianjing, PhD students in the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), have been awarded the Silver Award in the Jardine Engineering Corporation Outstanding Engineering Project Award (JEC OEPA) 2009–2010 for their project "A Retrofit LED Lamp." Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung of EE supervised the students' project. JEC's OEPA, launched in Hong Kong in September 2005, encourages future engineers to develop new ideas and embrace innovation for improving the engineering industry. Sixteen teams from local universities participated in the competition this year.
