First Omics Science conference
In keeping with its commitment to advancing research into public health, CityU will host the International Conference on Translating Omics Science to Clinical Applications (TOSCA 2013) from 13 to 15 August. The international field of experts, including interdisciplinary scholars from CityU, will discuss how advances in imaging, proteomics, metabolic phenotyping and healthcare can be translated into improvements in patient treatment and population health management. Professor Istvan Horvath, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Biology and Chemistry, will deliver the opening remarks at the conference.

Volunteers wanted
The City-Youth Empowerment Project, together with the Society for Community Organisation (SoCO), Salvation Army and St James' Settlement, will conduct a city-wide homeless street count for the Homeless Outreach Population Estimation (HOPE Hong Kong 2013) project on 21 August. It is the first time that community organisations serving the homeless have joined forces with a university service-learning platform to conduct a city-wide homeless street count. The collected data will help community organisations lobby for effective resources and policy change. CityU staff and students are welcome to register here as volunteers to take part in the street count.

New appointment
Professor Zang Xiaowei has been appointed as Chair Professor of Social Sciences in the Department of Applied Social Studies and concurrently as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He will assume duty on 15 August. He was the Head of the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield from September 2008 to January 2013. His research interests lie in the fields of ethnicity, gender, and social networks.
