Senior management workshop
To promote and enhance responsible performance management and corporate governance, CityU will hold a Management Workshop for heads of units and other senior staff on 9 May. Discussions will touch on “Responsible Performance Management” and “CityU as an Entrepreneurial University”. Professor Way Kuo, University President, will give the opening speech followed by talks by senior members of the management team.

 

Ranking
CityU has climbed one place to 17th in the Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 exercise, a ranking of the top 100 universities under 50 years old.

 

Antarctica expedition
Participating students have discovered new ways to understand climate change following an art and science research expedition last December and January to Antarctica. Their 13 new media artworks will be showcased at an Opening Gala on 23 May. The exhibition, titled “Freeze Frame”, will run from 24 May to 14 June.

 

City University Distinguished Lecture Series
Professor Herbert Gleiter, Senior Member and Professor at the Institute of Nanotechnology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, will give a talk titled “Nanostructured Solids—From Nanoglasses to Quantum Transistors: The Door to a New Generation of Technologies?” on 14 May. Professor Gleiter’s contributions to his field have been cited more than 18,000 times and have achieved the highest citation impact score in Materials Science in Germany and are number two in Europe.

Professor Maxime Schwartz, a molecular biologist on bacteria and the former Director General of the Institut Pasteur (1988–1999), will discuss his topic “The New Infectious Diseases: Where Do They Come From?” on 30 May.

 

France–Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series
The France–Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series, established in 2005, is a series of high-profile lectures under the auspices of the French Academy of Sciences and co-organised by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao and CityU. Professor Yves Bréchet, Professor at the Grenoble Institute of Technology, and a member of the French Academy of Sciences, will give a talk titled “Material Science: From Materials Discovered by Chance to Made-to-Measure Materials” on 29 May.

 

Emerging Technologies Forum
Professor Jane Prophet, Associate Dean of the School of Creative Media, will be a keynote speaker at an Emerging Technologies Forum on 3D printing on 23 May. Her presentation is titled “Reawakening TechnoSphere Creatures Discover that They are Not Alone after a 20-year Sleep”. Professor Prophet is an artist who has worked with new media for two decades making photographic pieces, installations, objects and video.

 

Conference on Robotics and Automation
Professor Ning Xi, Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering, is the General Chair of the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 31 to June 5. This conference aims to enhance the professional image among researchers in engineering and to provide a channel for researchers to present their latest research results. 

 

Kudos
Professor Andrey Rogach, Chair Professor of Photonics Materials in the Department of Physics and Materials Science, was conferred the title of Honorary Professor at the Centre of Nanomaterials for Renewable Energy in the School of Electrical Engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University “in recognition of his great contribution to Nanoscience”. In addition to being a rare honour, the professorship further strengthens the strong relationship between Xi'an Jiaotong University and CityU, which includes a joint PhD programme.

Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Dean of the School of Creative Media and Chair Professor of Media Art was recently appointed Visiting Professor at Imperial College London Institute of Global Health Innovation.

The CityU sports teams have won the men’s and women’s overall championship titles for an unprecedented eighth time in their divisions in the annual sports competitions organised by The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK). In all, CityU teams won championship titles in 10 sporting events, 14 runners-up positions, and three third-placed positions. In addition, nine CityU athletes won the Most Valuable Player Awards in their respective events. At the same time, Grace Lau Mo-sheung, a Year 2 BSc (Creative Media) student in the School of Creative Media, was named the USFHK Sportswoman of the Year from among the six nominees.

Ching Hong-yan, a final-year Electronic and Communication Engineering student, and Mr Max Choi Chi-kuen, a Computer Engineering graduate in 2013, won the Certificate of Merit for Best Student Invention (College & Undergraduates) Award at the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2014. The project was supervised by Professor Hong Yan, Chair Professor of Computer Engineering in the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), and Dr Leanne Chan Lai-hang, Assistant Professor in EE. The project is titled “Mobile Device and Cloud Server based Intelligent Health Monitoring Systems”.
