Senior appointments
Professor Arthur Ellis has been re-appointed as Provost based on the recommendation of the Special Committee for the Re-appointment of Provost. In addition, Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on has been re-appointed as Director of Communications and Public Relations, in addition to his concurrent appointment as Chair Professor of Information Systems and E-commerce. Professor Li Hsiao-ti is the Head of the new Department of Chinese and History, and Professor Ray Forrest has been re-appointed as the Head of the Department of Public Policy.

Institute for World Literature
Jointly organised by the Institute for World Literature of Harvard University and the Department of Linguistics and Translation at CityU, the fourth summer school session of the Institute for World Literature (IWL 2014) will be held through 17 July at CityU. The 4-week programme includes seminars taught by leading names in world literature today, together with outstanding guest lectures and opportunities for participants to share their work in affinity groups, as well as panels on pedagogy, programme development, publishing, and the job market. More than 130 participants from all over the world will have the chance to examine critically the latest challenges of this comprehensive and rapidly developing field, from its theoretical concepts and the history of the discipline to its forms of practice today embedded in a world market.

Science and engineering outreach
A series of activities has been devised to promote interest in science and engineering among S.4 to S.6 students. The “Science and Engineering Fun Days” will include talks, laboratory tours and workshops. Topics range from physics and materials science and forensic CSI to creating smartphone apps and rapid prototyping. The events are being organised by the College of Science and Engineering, and will take place between 16 and 18 July.

CityU Convocation
The Inauguration Ceremony of the Fourth Standing Committee of the CityU Convocation will be held on 18 July. The Council Chairman, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, and the President, Professor Way Kuo, will be the officiating guests. The Convocation strengthens the alumni network and facilitates alumni taking part in University development. The Inauguration Ceremony this year is particularly meaningful as it is organised within the 30th anniversary celebration year.

Hong Kong Book Fair 2014
CityU Press will launch 13 new titles at the Hong Kong Book Fair from 16 to 22 July at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. In addition to exhibiting recent press publications, all at discounted prices, CityU e-books will be showcased on interactive touch screen displays, helping visitors discover a new e-reading experience.

Kudos
Five Year 2 students from the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering won awards in a regional structural design competition organised by South China University of Technology. Entrants came from universities in Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macau. Cui Junhe, Lee Ka-chun and Song Han-joon won the overall 3rd prize in the competition, and Mok Ka-yi and Wong Chun-wai were awarded a Merit prize.
